Hello everyone, I was curious if it is legal for me (at age 19) to own an AR platform rifle in Tennessee? I've been told yes by some shops and good friends (including police officers) while at the same time I've been told by some people (also including police officers) that I cannot own an AR. I was curious if anyone could enlighten me and/or send me links as to where I can find the information. It would be for range time only if anyone is curious.

Thanks all and be safe,

I just spent a few minutes kicking that around on that website and a few others. It is possible that I am only partially correct. Specifically, the Federal statute says you must be 18 years old to purchase long arms and 21 years old to purchase handguns.

However, that is an FFL sales rule, it is not a possession rule. Ownership of a firearm varies state to state. Some states allow kids as young as 14 to own a firearm so if Dad wants to give Junior a rifle for his birthday it is legal for Dad to do so and legal for Junior to own. NOTE WELL: That VARIES by state so you have to check your local rules. Buying a gun versus owning one is not the same thing.

18 years of age is the legal age requirement for purchasing and owning long guns, rifles and shotguns, in the Great State of Tennessee and in conjunction with federal law. See 18 U.S.C. Section 922(b)(1), Tenn. Code Ann. Section 39-17-1316 and for reference, Tenn. Code Ann. Section 39-27-1351.

The age of majority in Tennessee is 18 but, the age for purchasing and owning handguns is 21 pursuant to federal law.

Enjoy!

That is not correct.

Federal law only restricts transfer of handguns BY A LICENSED DEALER to persons under 21.

Federal law does not prohibit possession of a handgun, or private transfer of a handgun, to a person age 18.

Be careful when you read the law. There are things that can be LEGALLY be done privately that cannot be done by a LICENSED DEALER.
