Are L and N frame hammers the same size?

Does each frame size mean different hammer sizes as well?
I want to put a target hammer on a L frame 686 but have only found N frame hammers.

That's NOT A 100% statement as most K & N' are interchangeable.

Not correct. N frame hammers just fit N frames. MIM FMFP K & L frame hammers interchange. K & L frame hammers with firing pin are not the same. Earlier (forged) 17 and 617 hammers are different than the CF's.
