I have a M&P .45 magazine that isn't feeding the last two rounds in the 10 round mag. Took it apart and found a couple of things. One, the upper third of the spring is discolored black, kinda like what you would see if you put a flame to it. I don't know if that has any effect on the second thing but that part of the spring is getting hung up in the lower part of the spring when compressed. It looks like the part that's discolored can't hold it's shape and it gets bent out of shape when compressed and can't uncompress and feed all of the rounds. If I call S&W and let them know what the problem is can I send it in and get a replacement or am I out of luck? Is it spare parts now? In the meantime I have already ordered more mags from 44mag.com.

M&P springs are color coded. Two of my M&P 45 mags are blue at the top, the rest are black. How old are the magazines and is the spring installed the right way with the very top lip pointed toward the front of the magazine/follwer?
S&W magazines are warrantied against defect, and I have gotten a bad one. However, springs do wear out and need periodic replacement every 5000 rounds or so. From what you describe, if the magazine has been used for awhile, I'd just buy a new spring from Brownells or S&W.

Wasn't aware of the color coding since I didn't pull the working magazine apart. Thought about it but figured it's working fine so there's no reason to. Assembly is good, not that many moving parts and pieces so it came apart and went back together with no problem.
The test fire date is 12/5/2012 and I purchased 6/2013. I have ~300 rounds through the pistol/magazines so I don't think it's a wear issue. Is it worth the time and cost of shipping to send it back to S&W or just buy new mags for $19-$24 and use the non-working mag for spare parts?

Are any of your mags working? Try switching out the spring from the non-working mag with one that works and see if it still has a problem. If it works then, I'd call S&W and say one of your mags only has X amount of rounds through it and is already worn out. They might send you a mag spring, so it's worth a shot instead of paying for a new spring.

Call S&W and ask. What can it hurt? I'll bet you lunch they either send you a new couple of springs or two complete mags. They probably won't even ask for you to send them anything.

I have changed mag springs because I thought I should, but I can't say that I've ever had one wear out. That said I agree you should pull your other mags apart and at least compare them. Chances are unless it got assembled wrong, a new spring will fix your problem.
Definitely a magazine spring problem. During the Denver/Dallas game I swapped out the mag spring from the working magazine to the non-working magazine and it cycles all 10 rounds fine with no hanging up. No worries, I pushed the rounds out of the magazine with my thumb not through the pistol. I know it's not a true test of the magazine but the bad spring wouldn't even feed all 10 rounds when pushing them out of the mag with my thumb. I am going to give S&W a call tomorrow and see what they say. Can't hurt and if I can get this one working again I will have 4 working magazines with the new ones I ordered.

I had two out of ten acquired in the past 12 months with the black colored springs go bad on me with a minimum of use. I had loaded five and used them for duty. After six months or so, I unloaded them, and loaded the second five for duty. Anyway, I went to unload the second magazines after making the switch back to a 9mm, and found that one mag hung up - follower stuck with rounds still in the mag. I took it apart and found the upper portion was bent. I went back and checked the others and found one in the first five I had carried was doing the same thing. I originally had five magazines when I bought my 45 FS back in 2009. They were responsible for feeding my pistol the bulk of the 8K rounds it has digested. One of those had the same problem, although it worked. I had test fired all of the ten I acquired last year and all had worked. I didn't think loading and leaving them caused the problem, rather some them don't compress properly. I do wish S&W would work on their mag spring design, or that Wolff would step in with an aftermarket alternative. I used Wolff mag springs in Glocks for years and never had a problem.

The mags are covered by warranty. There have been other posts concerning recent magazine problems. Followers and bad springs, I think.

My 40c came with the standard 10 round mag and the "pinky" finger rest base plate on the other.
Called them to see about buying the pinky base plate for the 2nd mag, and they sent me another one for free!
How's that for customer service.

I don't believe his story.
He claims to have had his "internals" freeze up due to heat from firing. I have fired 300 rounds through my M&P as fast as I could shoot it. The outside temp was 100°+ and I had 8 10 round mags. Also, I was using an UpLULA to help reload the mags so, it was pretty quick. Total time was less than 1/2 hour for all 300 rounds. My gun got plenty hot and never had a single issue.
How many rounds did he fire in how short a time? He hasn't said, but I smell something in his story and it ain't good.
Further, I'm having a hard time believing S&W wouldn't replace or repair his gun. It would have to be pretty obvious that it was something other than firing that caused the problem.
