are moon clips necessary

In S&W land I have a 625 and 325PD. The cylinders are bored so you don't HAVE to use moon clips, but then you are either going to have to dig the fired cases out with your finger nails or poke them out with a stick. I like metal 6 rounders. I have no problem loading them but did buy a demooner to get the empties out of the clip. My 325PD below.

your answer adds to the confusion.
does this mean if I buy a 640 pro and don't use the clips, the ejector rod will not eject the shells and I have to dig them out with my fingers? I think the other members are telling me that a 640 pro will function, fire and eject perfectly with or without the moon clips.
what am I missing?

What you are missing is the fact that the 325/625 firing .45 acp is a rimless cartridge, and will not eject them without the moon clips, where as the 640 firing a rimmed cartride will eject fine with or without the clips. Moon clips are a bit of work to load and unload, but are tons of fun at the range with reloads as fast as an semi automatic pistol

Fivetwo, dakota1911 and several others were talking about different model guns and a different rimless caliber.

The 640 Pro is designed to run with or without moon clips and shoots the rimmed 38 Special or 357 Magnum while doing it.

thanks to you and justintyme for clarifying this for me.

I have a 627 with moon clips (8shot). Works good. I found a demooning tool that looks like a hollow shaft nut driver. I empty a clip in about 10 seconds. My mooning tool looks like a flat pliers with a pin and a mandrel mounted on it. loading 8 rounds takes about half a minute. No pinched or cut fingers. No bent clips. 627 (and 625) reloads with the moon clips have never been faster.

It is funny how posts pop up to the top at opportune times. I am looking at a 627 PC and the moon clip question was bouncing around in my head, I open the forum tonight and there is my answer. Thanks!
