I was thinking of buying one but prefer and older one. I haven't seen one in 4 inch in a long time. I might have a line on 586-4 but it's round butt. I really don't care for the look of a round butt gun. If I get the older one will have to pick up some conversion grips.

I think it is technically a round butt frame with a grip that is shaped like the older square butt version. Could be wrong but need to pull the grips off my 586 4" to be str. David

Several years ago S&W went to all round butt guns. The theory is that a small or large grip can be installed on a round butt, but not vice versa. I recommend Herrett's for grips for the 586. His stuff will "square" things nicely for you.

Another possibility is Houge, who provides a variety of round to square conversion grips. I have used several on my newer S&Ws and they go in nicely and fit and look just fine David

Wait a moment. My 586 Classic is out with my son, so I couldn't check that but I was cleaning my Model 27 Classic 4" and looking at the frame that the wood grips are fit on and pulling a Pre-27 out of the safe, damn if the Classic looks like S&W brought back the square frame or its clone for this gun. Anyone else want to chime in here? I am confused as hell at this point. David

Someone hold me they were square. I will probably pick up the older round butt 586-4.

S&W does occasionally put out some square butt "specials" in small numbers. I'd be surprised to see one on a current standard production M586 or any of the massed produced revolvers. If S&W "round butt only" philosophy has changed it would be new and it would be noteworthy.

The new 586 classic series are Square butt Revolvers. They are also Serrated on the back straps. This leads me to believe that they will be a short Run in the catalog.I have the 6 inch version and it is has the best Dbl action pull i have ever felt in a Revolver.

Hey Kernal I should be picking up my M586 4" by no later than the third of march. I'll confirm my new production and see if it's round or square!

I think it's great that the square butt is back. More options is always good. It's been a long time in coming. Hope it sticks.

My new 686 appears to be rb correct? Not anything hiding beneath those soft grips ?

The new 686 regular catalog revolvers are all round butt.I have not seen any performance center models to verify those.

Pulled the grips off my 586 Classic now that my son returned it. It was obvious even before I took them off but it is a square butt, serrated back strap, as is my 4" Model 27 Classic. Very nice and the fit, function and build is excellent on both guns. David
