Greetings everyone. I am new to the forum. I am looking at buying a 627-5 PC. However, I have seen a few sites where folk have bought them over the past couple of years and have said that the quality is lacking on these guns. I would really like to know if S&W is having QC issues or is this just a bunch of nonsense? Please feel free to be honest. I don't want to shell out the kind of money these gun require and they are known to have issues. Thanks

Of course there are.

Any complex manufactured product will have a lemon from time to time.

No matter what the price, it is not possible for a company to make 100% perfect products, 100% of the time. Some folks will get lemons.

If you are asking is there a problem of epidemic proportions, then no. Think about all the S&W lemons you have heard about in the last year. Now realize that is from a production of more than 800,000 firearms that year. The percentage of lemons is pretty small.

Cases of canted barrels or finish issues have been mentioned in this forum, and that goes for all models. But for every bad egg there are many more that have zero issues. The perfect scenario would be a local dealer having one in stock for your inspection. That being said, i online ordered a NIB 627-5 PC snub and took the chance on it not being perfect. Other than a tiny ding on the barrel crown, it was all good. The ding didn't bother me, figured there would be a ding or two after a while anyway.

My 627 Purchases:
627 Perf. Ctr. 5" Barrel 8-Shot
627 Perf. Ctr. 2.625" Barrel 8-Shot
Yes, another 627 Perf. Ctr. 2.625" Barrel 8-Shot

I have also purchased
Performance Center 629 7.5" Barrel 6-Shot
Performance Center 586 L-Comp 3" Barrel 7-Shot
617 4" Barrel 10-Shot
And my dad gave me a 1975ish J Frame .38 5-Shot

Total No. of Issues between all S&W Revolvers = Zero
For general carry, 8-Shot capacity, and decent concealment good recoil control I recommend the 627 w/2.625"
For great concealment, including IWB, 7-shot capacity, and good recoil control, 586 L-Comp

One of my two 2.625" Barreled 627's after a full session at the range.

No matter whether you're looking at a production, or PC model, you'll want to scrutinize it closely & pay attention to the level of detail that matters most to you. Either one can be flawless or flawed, depending on your perspective and demands, & the one you find in-stock.

Not sure what barrel length you are looking at but I recently bought this 5" bbl. model, as I WANTED an eight shot N-frame 357. I scrutinized it before I bought it, comparing it to a TRR8 they also had new. All in all a good gun, but not flawless. Lock-up, carry-up fine. Trigger pull (SA & DA) good but no noticeable difference than any of the other recent production models I've bought.

The roughness of it's forcing cone & uneven (side to side) B-C gap were disappointing though. You see this on production models but apparently isn't given any special treatment/attention on PC models. Personally I don't see any obvious signs of "hand fitting" on the new guns, unlike on the old PC guns.
