I just picked up one of these. While reading the information it comes with I noticed that it says the new California law goes into effect January 1,2018. Is that a misprint?

It depends on how you look at it. The new law goes into effect on 1 Jan 2017. However, it allows owners up to 1 Jan 2018 to get their rifles registered. So, you can only be prosecuted after 1 Jan 2018 if you have an assault rifle that isn't registered.
