ARs $1600??

Please tell me that people are not still paying 1600 for a DPMS now that ARs are all over the shelves. My local Walmart had 3 colts 6920's in the case last week at one time and I see people on armslist still asking $200 over what you can buy a new one for. Saw an add for a DPMS for 1600 with fde furniture and just had to scratch my head and wonder what they are thinking?

Some people, both buyers and sellers, are real slow to catch on to changes in the market place. So these sellers either have not realized the spike in demand for any old AR-15 is over, or they are hoping to land one of the buyers who has not realized the spike in demand is over.

Most are coming down on their asking prices and it may take a few more months before the diehards admit prices are back to where they were before the political scare took place.

I have used them in the Military, owed 3 Colt Match Grade H-Bars. I dont own one at the moment. Too me (and thats me) the are one heck of a pain to clean and maintain. But I still want another colt. I think about it some. Walmart has a couple in stock for about 1100 apiece. I havent looked em over to see if there as good as the H-Bar. But then I think for the same money I could get a NIB Remington 308 varmint bolt gun AND a nice SKS.................more thinking to do. Regards Ernie

Very tough to answer as you already alluded to b/c of the range of quality and options. Some ARs are worth $1,500 or way more if they're collectible or have the right bells and whistles, but they were worth that before the big grab too. Say $650 to $1K depending on maker and options. Can get 'em cheaper of course, but gives you a range of basic good quality ARs.

Just read on another forum where a guy scored a used SCAR with accessories for $1800. Those that pay $1600 for a DPMS are not smart, but then I won't pay that much just to get a gun with Colt written on it either.

I think what your seeing is the tail end of a few greedy people trying to make a last ditch profit on guns/ammo they paid too much for back in December. I can only hope that they financed their inventory on a 27% rate Visa. Welcome to Economics 101

My local Wallyworld has 2 right now M4 style AR's.
One is a Windham and the other is a Bushmaster.
Both are right at 850.00 but there are still some out
there who don't know the "Panic" is over.

My local gun stores are deliberately keeping their AR-15 inventory low. They say when the panic hit a lot of folks bought AR-15s with credit cards and now are looking to get out from underneath the payments. AR's are somewhat addictive and going in to the panic I had two. I traded one for a Model 29-3 and a High Standard Victor .22 target pistol. I now have no desire to own more than one AR-15. I get emails from PSA and I am seeing some very good prices on uppers and complete rifles. I would say if anything is still in short supply it is the BCGs. Especially the ones that meet M16 specs. An M16 BCG should cost no more than $90 and last I checked they were bringing double that or more.

You can't go too wrong buying a Colt AR at WallyWorld. Mags are back to "normal" prices. Ammo is another story though. I paid $302/1000 for penetrator ammo and today it is about twice that. If anything kept me from jumping into AR's at this time it would be the price and availability of ammunition.

I was at a gun auction today, and of the half dozen AR's f various makes, only one brought over $1600. All the rest,inc. Colts and bushmasters went in the $850 to $950 range.

It's just my opinion based on my experience but my thinking is that when you are in the market for a gun you need to be patient and shop. Shopshopshopshop! You need to know what you want and take the time to learn what the market is for that item. If you run out "half cocked" so to speak, and buy the first thing you see you will get beat every time.

And that is nothing new. Really it has always been that way ESPECIALLY for guns. I bought my Colt LE 6920 nearly 4 years ago. I got it at a gun show for 1100 bux OTD. 3 hours earlier I was at a Carter's Country in Pasadena Texas and they had the exact same gun for $1700.00 + tax.

I do agree with the above post that mentioned something about some people being slow to come out of the panic. But that situation not withstanding you need to shop before you buy.

There will always be those out there that will unashamedly ask for more than an item is worth because there will always be those out there that lack the patience, maturity, or brains to avoid being taken advantage of.

I've been looking to get my first AR and it has been interesting.

First was looking aat S&W M&P15-22. Saw some online for $800 and some for $600, then found one for $499. Guy said it was $100 under Academy Sports, had to tell him they just lowered their price to $499 as well. Bought his as it saved me the tax and paperwork.

Now .223/5.56 are really all over the place. Local WM had Colt LE6920 for $1360, see them online used for $1300-2000. M&Ps are crazy as well. People asking more than retail, guess they haven't been back to the LGS to see prices are dropping. Found a NIB M&P Sport for $599 out the door online tonight, seriously thinking of getting it for that price. It'll be my intro into the 'big' ARs. Someday want to get a higher quality unit, but for starters I think the Sport will be just fine.

You do have to be patient and do the research, deals are out there if you wait and watch. Now, I gotta ammo up!!

Its mainly because of that is why I have an VIP deal with Bud's Gun Shop and others. The only savings grace for Wm for me--is their ammo prices (WHEN they have it in?) is the cheapest ive seen.

That's EXACTLY what ive told people for 35 years--for those who collect Militaria and other collectables. There will most likely be a person out there you will find-who is selling what you want-and in better condition from what you already found-and for a cheaper price.

The majority of folks who got caught in the buying panic were 1st-timers who had never owned AR platform rifles, and were scared of an imminent ban. The AR buying frenzy was no different than the AK buying frenzy ... the lower end models were the ones that experienced the greatest price increase %-wise. Higher end ARs will always command prices commensurate with their quality; it's the cheaper model that are coming into bargain basement range.

Store policy. They did that when I bought a Henry .22 Lever Action.

However, I DID NOT let them wrap the box up with shipping tape like they wanted to. It practically took an act of God to not have them ruin the box with tape....another stupid store policy.
