Art Guns....

Friend of mine introduced me to this term a few years back. There are working guns, hunting guns, ....and then there are what he called "Art" guns. Guns built to be both functional and to show off the skills of the maker. Guild guns come to mind as do some of the early Winchesters that were finished to a very high level. Many Black Powder guns fall into this category...

With all the collectors of firearms on this forum... I was wondering if anyone had a "Art" gun that they'd be willing to share a pic or two of? Certainly some of the guns that Doc44 has shared with us are in this category...

Chad...that one is really something. The hounds are a throwback engraving style to the earlier 1800's...with a London influence. Really quite something.

In Texas those are called BBQ guns. In Texas there are actually three classifications of guns. Working guns, BBQ guns and Court guns.
These include the leather and appurtenaces.
A working gun is plane jane-as bought, with plain leather, no frills or silver or gold.
A BBQ gun is a fancy piece of carving, gold and silver inlay. Leather is tooled and fancy colors. Buckles are ornate , silver and gold.
Court guns are for meetings with bankers, lawyers and court work. They are carved but rarely display silver or gold inlay, leather is also tooled but tastefully--probably with silver buckles.
There are thousands of exhibits of this/these works in Texas---you may want to pass thru Waco sometimes and stop in at the Texas Ranger museum and see a lot of these toted by the boys that wore the star.

Here are a couple pics of a stock I bought a few months back. It's a Boyds wood stock custom painted by Shadoe McGee of Florida. She normally paints high end guitars like Gibson and Les Paul. It's for my Winchester Model 70. I've since put it on the gun but never took pics. It just looks pretty in my gun safe
She's only done two rifles that I know of, the other was for a Remington I wish I had bought also.

Ithaca Lefever 'A' grade 12ga Nitro Special from 1934/35 I did up for myself.
Butt stock is new to factory dimentions pretty much but I lessened the drop a bit and added a leather covered pad.,,forearm is orig BT but needed some serious repair. 'Grey' tone finish on receiver,,rust blued bbls, triggerguard, top lever, etc. Single N/S trigger gun.
Dog on the trigger guard, ducks on the sides and a goose on the bottom,,just cause I hadn't done any in a while. Plus the gun, gauge and chokes kind of pointed in that direction.
Shot skeet with it, that's all.

Ruger 44magnum BlackHawk from '56 (IIRC). New 2 piece steel trigger guard and grip strap to replace the damaged aluminum factory parts. Near full coverage and a touch of gold inlay. Ivory grips with the original Ruger grip medallions polished flat and recolored. Couldn't save the orig grips. The original owner was a wanna-be fast draw type and was pretty hard on the gun but the mechanics held up well.
Made this one up for myself too as a project.

CSMCo mfg'r AH Fox 28ga. Just what the customer wanted..actually the customer just wanted a lot of gold. A couple different karat yellow gold and colors of gold, plus silver and copper in the inlays. Did the wood carving too but it hardly shows in the pics.
Was done about 8 or 9 years ago.
