The city of Midland has had this robot surveying sidewalks for "accessibility" for a few weeks now. Apparently now it has been "assaulted."

Hmmm, interesting legal description. When did vandalism/destruction of public property become “assault?” Did Cool Hand Luke assault those parking meters now?

Yeah, the guy calls himself a "digital creator." That usually means he's desperately trying to make a buck or two from facebook ads or just seeking attention.I seriously doubt "West Texas Wanderer" has any legal training and certainly has not passed the bar

I live in Midland and I've seen it twice. I was thinking it was tracking speeders. I see it again I'm gonna stop and check it out. Won't be assaulting it.
Call me when the robot sues for pain and suffering.

The city claimed it was surveying sidewalks for accessibility. They also said that it was being done at no cost to taxpayers by a couple of grad students from Texas Tech for their Master's theses (if memory serves).
If that's an assault, what is shooting up a stop sign?

The young man has been apprehended and charged with malicious damage to property. I believe that's a class C misdemeanor, so he is unlikely to do any jail time. Probably a fine, court costs, and restitution.

Here is sunny CA the only non-human that can be "assaulted" in a legal sense is a police K-9. (Maybe police horses too. I am unsure of that.)

The word "assault" is often used to describe sexual assault. I understand that nowadays there are robots made for the purpose, so if this particular robot didn't give consent that could be a problem.
