When I started low carbing it about fifteen years ago, I went with the revised version of Dr. Atkins' original book:

It works. No reason to pay full price when the paperbacks litter used bookstores for pennies.

Carbs aren't inherently bad. Bad carbs are bad--like simple sugar and white flour. Potatoes are healthy until they're loaded with salt and fat toppings

Likewise, meat protein is not inherently good for you. High meat consumption is not healthy either.

Using the SAD (standard american diet) as a starting point, most people need to eat:
less meat
less sugar
more fiber
more vegetables
more fruit (juice doesn't count--it's fructose without fiber.)

Here's a couple good sources:

I've made some substantial dietary changes in the last year. I eat more vegetarian meals (many per week) I no longer add salt, and I avoid sugar as much as possible. I also eat out sparingly. I've lost about twenty pounds and my blood pressure has gone way down (from hypertension to normal).

short and sweet...

well, maybe not sweet but here's a 25 page "diet" book written about 150 years ago - it still applies today - basically what I do and it's less than $1.

Or you can also get that EAS shake that WMsells--four toapackfor about four or five bucks a pack.Do those three times a day for aweek--you tummy willshrink and you will automatically eat less.Only--just no other foods while doing this for a week.after a week, get a steak or a sandwich or something--you will see you cant eat as much as you did--and it hurts nothing in dieting. I know--I tried that on oh eight. First week WAS hell--asI was used to over eating but--you can gradually shift an EAS shake for a can of soup--or a small salad and still works. I did this for a month and lost at least twenty pounds. Also, I DID NOT--stay on EAS the entire time and still lost weight. I stopped using EAS only because I got tired of the taste. When I tried them, they had: Chocolate, Strawberry, French Vanilla and I THINK--Dutch Chocolate?? Trick to EAS--is drink it VERY cold.I hated the French Vanilla--but the others were better.

Have to love a diet plan that insists that a few slices of fresh whole grain bread is bad, but that a fistfull of bacon(the only proper measure of bacon to consume) is good...

Try eliminating sugary beverages. No more Soda Pop, double carmel macchiatos, milk shakes...it all goes. And don't replace it with diet sodas laced with who knows what either. Drink water. Plain ordinary water.

Have a salad, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables are with your dinner.

Get slightly more exercise each day. Park further away, carry rocks in your pocket, whatever.

Do those things and you will lose a few pounds.

That will be $500.

There is no one type of diet that works for everyone. My husband did the Adkins years ago and it worked very well for him. Me, no, I was so miserable, constipated the time. What I did lose came back as belly fat which is the worst kind healthwise. Several other friends had the same experience.
Overall Adkins seems to work better for men, must be the bacon!

The Atkins diet works very well for several reasons but the most important is that you cut out carbohydrates, which stimulate appetite in most people. You eat mostly protein, and some say fats, but I have found that cutting way back on fats also will help also.

This is probably not a great diet to say on for very long periods of time, but for a few months you can lose weight quickly.

Note; carbohydrates cause us to retain water, so some of the weight lost will be water, not real fat loss. This weight will come back very quickly when you get off the diet. Therefore you need to lose 4 to 7 pounds more than your target weight, depending on your size and how strictly you cut out carbohydrates.

Note. Not all carbohydrates are the same. Green beans, broccoli, and other complex carbohydrates are far more acceptable than bread, pasta, chips, cakes, pies, starches and sugars.

I also cut out all carbohydrates and most fats for the first week to really get the diet going, then slowly added some of the more acceptable carbohydrates back in. I also cut back on calories, which is much easier on Atkins, because the high protein diet does not leave you hungry a hour or two later like a diet with lots of simple carbohydrates.

You need one of the very inexpensive carbohydrate counter books, and probably almost any Atkins Diet book with a decent rating on Amazon would be fine. It is not very complex, but it is one of the best diets out there, especially if you only have to lose a few pounds.

I've been vegetarian for 6 or 7 years.... No meat, a normal amount of carbs. 6' 173 lbs and a 285 lb bench press....

Yes, portion control and activity are the way to go.

When I was cutting weight to enlist, I counted my calories almost obsessively. I had a set amount that I would not go over each day. It wasn't ridiculously low or anything, but a limit was set and I stuck to it.

To prove a point to a friend who felt fad diets where the way to go, I spent a week getting my calories from junk food. No surprise, I lost weight at the end of that week. I just kept my calories to where they were supposed to be and kept up my activity level.

If you have a "smart device" look for the app "my fitness pal". I am not sure if they have a website or not. You can put in your height, current weight, activity level, and your desired weight and it will lay out how many calories you should eat in a day. It is quite accurate and effective.

My initial investigation into low carb eating involved the South Beach diet, which is essentially high end Atkins. I dropped 30 pounds in about 10 weeks and have kept most of it off. You don't need a book.
1. Stop counting calories
2. Stop eating anything that comes from a box or is pre-prepared by some factory.
3. Eat good fats. Butter, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado and walnut oil, grapeseed oil. NO corn oil, NO "vegetable" oil, NO margarine, NO Crisco or other erzatz fats. Un-hydrogenated lard is good fat.
4. Banish, BANISH the following: Breads and bakery, potatoes, rice, pasta and breaded-fried foods.
Eat all you want of lean meats and leafy green vegetables. Eat fruit and fruit juice in serious moderation. I'd leave fruit out completely for at least two weeks.

My wife has a terrible time following low carb guidelines. She loves my low carb dinners, but makes up for it at work in the daytime. I work with a bunch of women and they are always bringing in carb-laden snacks.

While I personally would not go meat free, it just illustrates that a lot of different things can work.

The truth is, it is a simple math problem. I tried every fad diet there is, including Atkins (which actually lead to blood pressure and cholesterol increase).

But as I was saying, it is a math problem. Calories in < calories used for your activity and body weight. After years and years of trying different diets, it came down to the simple fact that I had to reduce calories.

Finally, after years of trying, I was able to lose 45 pounds. I still have some to go, but I'm on my way.

Like Ski mentioned, I eat anything. Meat, pasta, rice, fish, vegetables, fruit, and even cake, pie, candy, ice cream.....

I just make sure I keep the calories down, and you don't deprive yourself of anything.

Don't get me wrong, I was just pointing out that different things work, and that yes, you can get enough protein without meat.

I just make sure I keep the calories down, and you don't deprive yourself of anything.

That's exactly the thing.... You DON'T need to eliminate any food, just go easy on calories.

My girlfriend is on a Keto diet. I know she dropped at least 15 lbs and looks good...especially while keeping her curves ;)

Her male friend is the one who actually tried it first and he dropped over 40 lbs. Once my girlfriend and I move in together, I'll be on it too. She has a few cookbooks and some of the stuff she made (including pizza and pasta) wasn't too bad.

I try to eat as my ancestors did. Lean protein, fruits and vegetables. I try to keep my starches down but when my wife does something like this;
http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/422443-i-think-my-wifes-out-get-me.html
I find that my will power falters.
Over the last week, the weather cooperated a bit and I was able to get out and go for a few hikes in the mountains. Also, there's a resort nearby that I go to for physical therapy. They've only been open every other weekend for the winter but they'll be open more often soon.
I gained twenty pounds over the winter. I know I'll get it off and I've already lost four pounds of it already.

I've tried all the diets and am currently on the Paleo diet and it is working out very well. It is more of a life style and not just a way to drop weight quickly, and it involves lots of protein -meat, fish, chicken, nut, eggs, and whey protein mix. It eliminates breads and dairy but I still have a little yogurt or skim milk occasionally, and I also have eliminated a lot of glutens since my wife is going "gluten free". I feel great at 55, I'm 5-9 and 192 and have retained nearly all of my muscle from my younger days. I see a lot of older guys that look great and never work out but then one day you see them and nearly all their muscle is gone. Losing your muscle is like taking the engine out of you car and putting in a Moped engine. There is not enough power and you feel tired all the time.
