Just one time I'd like a detailer to show up in my driveway, with his/her vehicle looking like it was maintained the way I want my car detailed, as opposed to an upstate N.Y. SALT CAR...

RANT OFF!!.. ( yes I sent them away )

Sal. the gentleman who Details my car, arrives at my house, picks up my car and leaves with it. 4 -5 hrs later he returns with Fat boy and it looks Great. I then hand him a pile of $20.00's and thank him for his time.

Life is good!!!

P.s, Rusty has photos.... Perhaps he will post a few

I dropped by a detailer the other day and asked what detailing my compact SUV interior would cost. Guy said $200. This for two YO car that I've been keeping vacuumed.

Seemed kinda steep to me.

What're you guys payng?

It's like the house painter whose house looks like it belongs in a slum . Or the mechanic whose car is always breaking down . If you detail auto's all day , at least 5-6 days a week , you think you'd want to detail your work van ? Let his work speak for itself .
My father-in-law was a mechanic. When I was just a customer, he always did the best work he could possibly do on my cars. Then I married his daughter. I became family. And you don't charge family. So all he did was keep it running. Didn't matter if the engine looked like crud. Long as it was running.

That was the way he did his car also. Just keep it running. Paying customer cars - they looked and worked fine. Why? Because those people gave him money. Spending 5 hours working on his engine was 5 hours wasted, because he didn't make any money for it.

I tried convincing him to treat me like before I married his daughter - do the best job possible and charge me for it, but he wouldn't do it.

The house painters house looks like ****. The mechanics car barely runs. The cobbler's children are barefoot. Because the time he would spend painting his house or working on his car or shooing his children is time taken away from when he could be making money.

That's crazy high! For $200, what are they supposed to be doing? For that price here in ABQ you can get your whole vehicle done!

What do you want done in your interior? Is it leather? Do you have: Stains? Pet hair? Strange smells?

If you can do it yourself, and there are no issues and it's basic cloth interior plastic dash and everything else, just buy a can of Pledge furniture polish, some Terry cloth towels and spray away glass cleaner and do the work yourself.

For leather, I use Harley Davidson leather products mainly because the products are for leather on bikes that are exposed to all kinds of harsh environments. Works for me.

For tires, I like clean black tires, but I don't like them glossy as glossy stuff attracts dust and kicks up on the lower fenders. I use a stiff bristle brush, and a dawn dish soap solution and scrub away. Rinse, and let dry. Then, I use an old damp scrap cloth and use pledge on the tires.

Ματθιας, I have a stain on the leather upholstery near the driver's side arm rest that I think originated from suntan lotion or bug repellent or similar from when my wife was driving.

Man, I tried everything I could think of on it without success. The detailer who wanted $200 for the interior job, after briefly trying his product on it, said he could not fix it. He speculated that perhaps my efforts had abraded it.

I looked around for a while and found these guys: Custom VIN Matched Leather Dye — Seat Doctors They provide leather seat interior dye based on VIN numbers, so they know exactly what color you need. I bought a 4 oz bottle for $25, shipped.

Leather can be a pain especially light colors. If you have light colored leather and the oil from whatever stained it dark, it might be too dark for the dye. If it is, you might have to oil it to darken it to match or worse case, live with it.

"Caturra Brown," which is a very dark, almost black, brown. Stain is kinda powdery, pale whitish. Should work out okay. (I hope!):)

Depends, imo on what “detail” you’re getting. Is it the interior and exterior, do you need paint correction, is he using a clay bar, are wheels taken off and the barrels getting cleaned and polished, is he doing the trunk, how about the engine compartment.

If he is just putting wax over a washed car……

Oops reading is fundamental :o $200 for just an interior is theft.

The condition you describe is known as Cobblers' Shoes in the UK.

I have a car wash membership at a place right by my house and I can run it through as often as I like for a $24 monthly fee. Sometimes I'll wash my truck two or three times a week if its been raining or I've been through some puddles and they have the vacuum, compressed air, and towels so I can keep it clean pretty quickly. I like keeping my vehicle clean and the wax that the car wash machine applies seems to keep the paint looking like new even after 197K miles.

Someone has a detailer that comes to his house? Must be nice.

I take pride and joy in doing it myself. My wife was offered a $500 ceramic wax job by the dealer for her new car. I did it for 14 bucks and it only took 1/2 hour.

I have known several collision guys that did outstanding work. They all drove battered junk.

I had some contractor work done a few years ago and had a bunch of quotes. The guy I selected came highly recommended and did a fantastic job. Simple old pickup truck. One other prospective contractor came in a new Caddy and he was dressed to the nines. His price was highest so that eliminated him anyway. But later he was arrested and served time for bribery of govt. officials to get priority bidding.
