A older model 29 has hit my fancy. Like i posted before i have been out of the gun game for many years and i know prices have changed since i was heavy into trading 20 years ago.

I remember shooting a 3" or 4" M29 with hot loads and it put a beating on my hand. Looking for something with a longer barrel.

What is good M29 going for used these days?

I paid $600 for a 29-3 in the original box with a bit of muzzle wear. It came with original rubber grips. The wood target grips are worth a bit more. The 29-2 is worth more.

I also have a 29-10 that I believe is unfired after it left the factory. It is laser (factory) engraved (see my avatar). I paid $700 for it on GB.com.

I like the 29 more than the 629 (which I don't own.) I like N frames in polished nickel also.

anything less than a grand is a pretty good price these days unless the conditions is below 90%. I looked at a 6" 29-2 yesterday and it was priced at $1250 with wood box (missing lining) and mismatched tools. The gun was in good condition but certainly not great. I thought the asking price was about $300 too high.
I dont know if its my AO or what but the prices people generally post on this and other boards do not at all reflect the going prices where I am. In addition you can forget about the blue book. A couple months ago I was trying to purchase a nice revolver at a gunshow and I mentioend the blue book value, he seller laughed at me and said "yeah well, that doesnt reflect reality" he also went on to mumble something about our Gun Salesman-In-Chief and his effect on prices. Funny thing was as we further tried to put together a deal and I offered a trade I had with me, what did he do first....... wait for it......... pulled out the blue book to quote me the value of my trade. Yeah, classic. No wonder some of these guys schlep their stuff from show to show, week in and week out. I guess thats why they call them gun SHOWS and not gun SALES.

It depends on barrel length and vintage. Right now the 4" are the most expensive, so it's good you don't want one ;) . I recall these sitting in glass display cases new, very slow sellers way back when. The 6.5" have the "Dirty Harry upcharge", and the 8 3/8" seem to be the slow sellers now.

Presuming you want a -2 or -3 in nice used condition, $600-750 should find you one with careful shopping. Sellers may ask higher but I don't see them actually bringing higher at auction.

I just picked up a new unfired S&W m29-10 6 1/2" barrel in blue for $699 in the used gun case. It came with the original blue plastic case and the wooden presentation case.

My point is there are deals if we stay looking.

I could swing that price if the gun is really in good shape.

This is true. I was basing my comment on the fact that OP said he wanted an "older 29". This to me means -4 or older. The newer models are certainly out there but definetly dont command the prices of the older models.

I have shown this a dozen times since March, but I got this 90%+ 29-2 from the largest local dealer for $625 OTD. It was marked $675+tx+BGC, which wasn't a bad price to start with. You need to be patient, ready to deal when you find something, and have the cash to pay in full on the spot. Joe

I understand. But when I was browsing my local dealer had the new s&w m58 & m57 both in nickel for $699 also. My point is with my s&w m29-10 it's supposed to be the best 29 ever produced. For almost have the cost and there brand new that's hard to pass up.

If your not in a hurry and will be patient you can still find one at a decent price. In the last year have brought home a nickel 29-2, with 8&3/8 inch barrel for a surprising price of 399 plus tax in 85% condition plus, yes was quite surprised, later a 29-3 ,4 inch blue in 95% came home for 600 dollars, they can be found.

It seems everyone but me has gunshops where people actually trade decent older guns, as well as pawnshops. I keep up with who has what, and you would think that our current economy would make the pawnshops a good source. Visiting these establisments only seems to result in hearing the word "no". Ammo isn't the only thing that is in short supply. I have found one 6 inch 629 that looked like it had been in someone's tool box. Gripe concluded at 9:25 PM. DLB
