Back for more with a 15-4

After success with this sub forum and a locked up 442 I figured I should try to fix my 15-4. The cylinder release is sticky and sometimes doesn’t allow for a clean release. I believe the “pin” or plunger that pushes the detent is too short. It seems to be moving freely inside the tube. Any help is appreciated and photos will be below.

In the second photo I am pushing the part with a pinch from the other side, it’s as far as it goes.

Maybe your "tube", extractor rod has come unscrewed a little bit and needs tightened. The thread is left handed on your 15-4.

Extractor rod, Ty for the correct term.

I removed the extractor rod and made sure it was clean inside and not gummed up. I put it back together and it is correctly tightened, still having the same problem.

Try oiling the pin in the barrel extension. They sometimes stick and don't easily move all the way forward. It looks like the pin inside the extractor rod does extend past the extractor when fully forward so that should be good enough. The pic looks like to has a detent in the end but maybe just the pic. Should be flat on the end.

Would a better picture help diagnose?

Remove the cylinder thumb latch and make sure that there is no crud between the bolt and the frame, not allowing it to fully travel forward for the cylinder to release.

In the second photo, it looks to me, on my device, that the lock pin does not come far enough forward. It should come flush with the end of the extractor rod.

I'm starting to think that there's nothing wrong with your revolver. What's wrong is your expectations of how you think it should work. With strong springs you have to keep the latch pushed fully forward and push the cyl open with the fingers of your left hand. It doesn't just flop open when you give the latch a little push. Assuming the pin in the frame lug moves freely after a little oil in both ends there's nothing in your pics to indicate a problem with the gun.

Have you had the side plate off? The two visible screws look the same but they are not interchangeable. If you or a previous owner switched them then that is likely your problem. The front screw retains the cyl-yoke assy and is carefully fitted to retain the parts with no end shake without binding. Try switching the screws and see if the stickiness when opening is caused by the wrong screw or it is overly tight.

Maybe I'm missing something but the center pin looks too long. I'm referring to the pin or rod inside the extractor rod that engages the front locking bolt. See the pic of an example of how mine are. I can't explain why it would be long. I would remove the center pin and re-assemble. I think it will function as it should. Another way to diagnose problems is to remove the locking bolt but you need to drive out the pin in order to do that. A proper punch is expensive.

I believe the cylinder should open and close easily while still mechanically be locked up when closed. It is a thing with me, to have it function smoothly. I guess a result of PPC shooting. I often have to dress the end of the extractor rod to get them to function satisfactorily.

In my pic I have pushed the center pin forward as far as I can. it doesn't even come close to the end of the rod.
