Backyard shooting

Last Saturday I meant to go to the range, however usual chores (cutting grass, grocery shopping etc..) took their toll and I missed the opening hours.

So I decided to quickly organise a back yard range, printed out a couple of targets, took two silenced rifles and shot abt 100 subsonic .22 lr. standing off hand at abt 30 meters.

The old rifle is a French semi auto Unique X51 made in 1965 with a 3X scope.

Obviously the other one is a 10/22 shorty.

The silencer fits both (and my Colt Service Model Ace pistol). It’s a British made Parker Hale

This thing is quite narrow

I do most of my shooting in my backyard. I live in the country so noise is not a problem. I have one stand used for silhouette targets that I can use up to 25 yds. I have 2 stands around 20 yds from my shooting bench for bullseye type targets and I have round steels plates at 80 yards along with a stand for regular targets. Not fancy but it’s practical and I can stand or shoot from a rest off my bench. It’s open every day during daylight hours and don’t have to deal with idiots at a public range. At the public range here, reloads are not allowed but at my range, reloads are encouraged.

That Parker-Hale is a good looking suppressor. Those have been in production forever, something like 50 years, right? I wish someone in the U.S. would make a good looking, blued suppressor, or that I could at least import the Parker-Hale. All I see are cerakote and matte finished suppressors, which would look odd on some of the older guns I'd like to suppress.

About 10 years ago I bought a case of aguila super extra 22's. I live in town. These things are quieter than a pellet gun and they work well when I'm jonseing for some trigger time.

edit. I've taken some rabbits out of my garden with these loads but have since gone to chicken wire.

My wife only complains if I don't sweep up the .22 brass of the front porch or back deck. Otherwise its a 5 min. ride to my personal range where all guns and all ammo is encouraged.

We just sold our house and looking for another place right now and renting an apartment in the meantime, but I'd love to find about five acres to build on so I could have a firing range out back so all my buddies that are into guns could come over and shoot.

I have about 6 1/2 acres that is about 1,200 feet deep. I can get 200 yards from my yard. There are no houses in line with it for over two miles.

I shoot about every caliber and have got my neighbors over being gun shy.

I have a nice hill on my property that makes a great backstop for bullets. I have shot so many thousands of rounds here I couldn't begin to guess how many. I know that it looks like my yard is paved with casings at times. Eventually they all wash down the hill and it looks normal again.

I even get to sit in my favorite chair in my living room and shoot out the front door when I want. In the winter I slide the door open just enough to stick a barrel out and I shoot all I want. I have a nice 50 yard setup but can shoot 100 yards if I feel like it. I had a home made bench setup for years. It makes for easy practice time to walk 30 feet from my front door to a 50 yard range especially for practicing my .22 groups. I love living in the country. And if I feel like shooting longer distances I drive out to my farm where I can shoot 400 yards if I want. I go to a gun range sometimes because they have nice benches but for most of my shooting it's just pure living in the country stuff. I've had my fill of city living.

If you are planning "back yard shooting" YOU BETTER live in the country. There isn't a municipal jurisdiction in the country that doesn't have an ordinance against shooting firearms inside the city limts.

Yes it’s a very nice piece, all steel, very slim, and quite efficient with CCI standard.

On my service model ace, it does not obstruct the sight picture

Went back at it with a silenced pistol, a 1979 Colt Service Model Ace with the same Parker Hale silencer.

Shot some speed drills at close range, about 10 meters.

Tried some subsonic CCI and some supersonic Federal

The distance was so short that a sonic crack could not really be heard. The detonation was louder though.

The metal door I used as a backdrop was pierced by some of the faster rounds. There was also a pine wood board to which the target was stapled, abt 5/8, and a wall behind it.

A reminder that .22lr can be quite a dangerous round. Maybe it’s because of its diminutive size, or the very negligible recoil, but I tend to forget how powerful it can be.

If you are planning "back yard shooting" YOU BETTER live in the country. There isn't a municipal jurisdiction in the country that doesn't have an ordinance against shooting firearms inside the city limts.

Even then, most counties in Texas have restrictions/limits on how much (or how little) land you must have to be able to shoot on it. In most locations where we've lived, the minimum was 10 acres, and even then, some counties have placed additional restrictions on recreational shooting or hunting. Obviously, home/self defense is a different matter.

When I was a kid, there seemed to be a lot of open land where you could go shoot...even at the city dump. Now about the only place you can go (unless you meet the land requirement) is a gun range, and plinking just isn't as much fun there.
