I was reading another hat thread and it mentioned "ball" caps. I think they are referring to the caps that in my world I've always heard them called "gimme" caps. Buy a piece of equipment and say "gimme" a cap. Paid insurance the other day and said "gimme" a cap. I was wondering if there are other parts of the country call them "gimmie" caps or is that just a local term? Larry

I've always refered to them as ball caps too. However there's a type of ball caps I call "farmers hats".

The FH ball cap has a tall and usually stiff front, (often with plastic venting in the back) and might say CO-OP or WHO FARTED? on the front.

Regular ball caps to me are rounded and soft, fitting the top of one's head snugly. To be worn with the bill facing forward of course, to shade the face and block the sun from the eyes. (It is legal to briefly turn the bill to the rear if the bill interferes with shooting a scoped rifle of course, or while speeding across the lake to your favorite fishing hole.) Fishing your lucky, now soggy, hat from the lake really slows one down, and nobody likes to wear a wet ball cap.

Never heard them called "gimmes" tho.

This is still in my favorites...I used to read..post or buy and keep up to date all things that a man with fashion taste should wear or have.

But now being a retired old codger, my dress of the day is old Levis, tennis shoes, and T shirt or sweat shirt and any of the old sweaty stained hats I still happen to have.

I am glad I was never one for shorts and flip flops, and have them for left over wearing apparel.!!!!! (You will be glad too!!!!!!!)

When I was in the plumbing wholesale industry I was an outside salesman.
Gimme hats were like a form of currency. I always marveled at the lengths customers would go to for a free hat or T shirt that advertised our business not theirs.
I found it ridiculous but you had to play the game.

If the cap had the name or logo of a business, they were called gimmi hats, otherwise just call ball caps. The last time I got a gimme hat was when I bought a new Kubota tractor - got two. Now, they want $$ to advertise their product. If business were smart, they'd put their name/logo on the back of the cap, because so many people can't figure out how to wear a ball cap.

Never heard of "Gimme" caps. But the term does fit. I've acquired quite a few over the years from various vendors. I don't think I've ever actually bought one.
Around here we call them baseball caps. I've worn one for most of my life. Head out the door, grab my cap. Its just automatic after so many years.
The thing that was buggin' me was that there are two basic styles. You have the mesh summer cap and the solid fabric winter cap. Here in Tennessee, summers are hot and the sun is bright. The mesh hats are very popular. But it seems like the last few years I worked all anybody was giving away were the solid fabric caps. Trying to get a mesh cap was like pulling teeth.
I got a bunch of winter caps, but I'm down to my last summer cap.
Geez, I may actually have to break down and buy a new one.

Grayfox mentioned "baseball
caps."

And I've often referred to them
as baseball hats.

But "gimmie" hats I've known about
for a long time.

In cities I've also heard of
"gimmie your wallet" and "gimmie
your car" and "gimmie your watch."

I've always known them as baseball caps or truckers caps.

Here is an interesting article about the differences.

Have not heard the term gimmie cap in ages but I know exactly what it is. Now they call them trucker's caps. Cloth stiff front, mesh back, with the logo rolled on the front. See "John Deere cap".

I'm never without my ball cap, even when I was in the hospital after heart surgery, I had my cap on - and after the tubes were removed, I was wearing my jeans rather than that silly gown.

Hey!!!!!! Watch it, watch it...I have and wear my John Deere hat.:D:D:D...Got it where I buy my parts, so I guess it's a "gimmie hat not a "trucker"...

I've always thought of gimme cap as a cap with a company logo on the it that they give out as a promotion of the business. I got one when I bought my Kiota tractor. Ball caps on the other hand can be plain or have some type of insignia on it.
