Am considering the purchase of a 5" L frame series 686 Plus and might send it back for a Master Revolver Action Package. Found just a few threads that praise this fine-tune PC service but would appreciate a wider spectrum of opinions. Listed cost is $165 and round trip FedEx will add another $50-$60. Will this Action Package measurably improve functionality?

Thanks.

I got the 5" 686 plus performance center gun that comes with the master action package. It did have an amazing trigger. But ceased to fire Cci primered rounds reliably after about 900 rounds. Partially and probably due to the ribbed mainspring. I had to replace the mainspring on mine - just to keep it reliable.

I had a Model 19 get the Action Package and the trigger pull is the smoothest I have fired.

The package I had done also included a matte bluing. Picture below.

About 20-odd years ago, I bought an M66 from our Explorer post. I eventually did have that work done, and it was great. What that means TODAY, I dunno.

So, Lou, the Master Revolver Action Package provides the enhancement upgrades for Performance Center 686 Plus models?

The model i got was sold with a master action package with it. I tried looking it up, but i think it was discontinued.

It originally came with a front fiber red sight and rear steel sight.

When I was shooting PPC I always used local revolversmiths.

Also in my time we had local S&W Authorized Warranty Stations. So you got to know your revolversmith.

Back in the day, I was the final instructor in my agency to attend the Smith revolver school before we transitioned to G...each student was allowed to bring one of their personal revolvers to tune...so I'm good to go, but before I would spend for the PC work, I would CK around...many fine revolver tuners are around

I purchased a 610-3 4" 10MM a few years ago. I sent it into the Performance Center and the outdoor package and the as well as the action performance as well. Beveled the charge holes, crowned the muzzle, cleaned and polished the internals, set a trigger stop and adjusted the main spring. My main spring was adjusted to the edge; I gave it a half turn to be a little more reliable as some cheaper ammo wasn't as reliable. I had a 29-3 that was losing time, so they warrantied that and had the same work completed. Excellent work and as I felt, how it should have come originally. Those are my two favorite revolvers. The plus of my 610 VS the new Mountain Gun 610 is that I can interchange my front sight. I currently run it with a green fiberoptic front sight that shows up great.

If you find where these "Local Revolversmiths " are hiding, let me know. I usually have something that needs their attention.

My 'Smith is 400+ miles away, and backed up 3 years, and is turning down work.

The 686 Mountain gun that I foolishly bought back in June, (it's now late August) turned out to be such a disaster that I sent it beck 2 days after I paid $1200 for it. In the letter and phone conversation with Smith and Wesson, I specified that after the gun is brought up to spec under warranty, I wanted it taken to the custom shop and the Master Tune be done to it. I will, of course pay for the Tune. If I ever see that gun again, I'll report on there results. Then, it's highly likely, I'll sell it, and try to forget that mistake.

If it is done correctly, it should give a smoother double action pull, and if you plan to compete with the gun where reloads are required, the cylinder chamber chamfering wiill help with speedloader use. I didn't need the chamfering but got it anyway, because I didn't realize it was part of the Master Revolver Action Package I bought for a 25-5 about three years ago when I had Smith replace the cylinder with a new one with proper sized throats. It was a disaster. See my post here: https://smith-wessonforum.com/threads/quality-control.746904/#post-142309395
Besides what is shown there, they boogered the side plate with stone scratches and a screw driver slip. I'll never ever let the "Performance Center; i.e., Clown Show - touch one of my guns again.

The only downside to the package is the wait time. Well worth the $165, and the factory warranty also applies to the package.

Yes, I have complained too much about that gun.

But when I hand over $1200 and have nothing to show for it I tend to vent.

But in all fairness, I picked up a 3 inch 686 Plus. $920, new, OTD. It's a great gun. I love the 3 Plus. Hate the MG.

Thanks, all. Your responses proved very informative. I now have some doubts about the Master Revolver Action Package especially since Customer Service told me yesterday to expect a 7-9 week turnaround on any revolver work.
7-9 weeks is actually fast, if that's their current wait time. My last one came home in January of this year, and took almost 24 weeks. They originally quoted 10-12 months.
