Ballistol...Anyone?

We had an older guy in our shop gargle with kerosene when he had a sore throat. Sometimes this was after parts were washed in the kerosene too.

(Yecch!)

I love Ballistol for blackpowder guns. I use it on all of them and have never seen any rust, even months later. And I like the cool old German smell too! It smells like there's some Anise or Licorice in it. And grain alcohol.

I have used Ballistol quite a bit. I even like the smell of it.

The smell goes away after a few minutes. I have put it on leather items like belts, holsters and slings.

It is also good for oil finished wood stocks.

I even use it on cuts and scratches. [I have not gargled with it yet]

I like to use it on my guns it I am hunting in the rain as it "mixes" with water and I think it protects the gun better than regular oils that just wash off, or might even trap water under them.

I also wipe my guns down before I put them in the safe with RIG.

However when I am hunting in dusty conditions, or ridding around on an atv, I wipe and lube the gun with Prolix. It dries and leaves a protective layer behind and does not attract dust.

Everyone has an opinion about Ballistol--mine is that it is great stuff. I use it to clean and wipe down my stuff before it goes in the safe, and have no complaints at all. I've pretty much stopped using rival products.

Ballistol should never be used on Nickel-plated guns, because there is a film of copper under the nickel. Ballistol is corrosive to copper and will cause the nickel to flake-off of your gun over time!

Ballistol also should never be used as a long-term storage solution, either. It's an excellent cleaner, and has many, many uses, but longterm storage is NOT one of them.

Eezox is an excellent pre-storage protectant. I also recommend Bore Stores bags from Brownells.

Just ordered a couple of bottles of ballistol. No bad experiences yet. In the past i came to prefer metal shield over CLP. Just thought I would try something new. I do prefer the cinnamon smell of fp-10 to anything else..

Never used Ballistol. I don't expect any one product to do everything and look with a bit skepticism at the ad hype around any that do.

Though,,If it's primarily a wetting agent and mineral oil,,I can see where it can't hurt much.

Alot of BP shooters like it for patch lube.

I think it's been around since at least WW2. If that's the case it's not exactly a space age lube/cleaner.

Ballistol is great stuff, but some Nickel-plated guns are a big no-no with Ballistol.

And please, if ever have a gun with gold inlaid leaf, DO NOT use Ballistol. It will eat it right off over time.

I actually dont think that is true at all. However Hoppes and CLP most definitely will.

That guy is pretty opinionated.
