Selling a S&W 27-3 5" on the forum here.
Recived an email from a friend who said they saw a 3 1/2" barrel for sale for a S&W N Frame 27.
Were these all compatable? Any thread changes known? Any Pros or Cons on changing barrels?
Reason I am selling my 27 is to buy my David a carry gun. His #1 choice is a 3 1/2" 27 since he feels comfortable with the larger grips.
If it would be wise to exchange barrels, not bad. If issues it would be good to know. I would have it done by a gunsmith at least.
We are both retired and have to watch our finances like most folks.
Thanks,
Pat

The 3 1/2" barrel can be installed on your Model 27. All S&W barrel threads are 36 TPI. If you are lucky the 3 1/2" barrel will fit right up with little or no major work, other than minor adjustments for barrel/cylinder gap. If the B/C gap is too wide after installation, than the barrel would have to be removed and the shoulder cut back one turn, the end of the barrel cut down to get the proper B/C gap, and the forcing cone re-cut. A good gunsmith would be able to handle this job.

If your original barrel is pinned, and the 3 1/2" barrel is not, than the 3 1/2" barrel would have to have a slot cut or filed into the top of it so the pin can be used to pin the barrel in the frame.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge here. Will check out the barrel for sale further. Considering other options as trade/sale on my 27 (already listed here). Maybe my asking price is too high or just keep it. Never like messing with most things unless needed. It is in pristine condition and wary of having it handled by a gunsmith and getting scratch or nicked up. Too much thinking.lol!
Buying something like a 629 3" or similiar may be wiser.
Again, appreciate the information.
Have a good day.
