You have to remove the flash hider to remove the barrel from the upper. The forearm end cap is almost tight on the barrel, so there is no way it will fit over the flash hider. The inside diameter of the barrel nut is also smaller than the OD of the flash hider. If you only want to partially dis-assemble your rifle, then you don't need to take off the flash hider and you can make a special tool. The crush washer can be used multiple times, and their cheap.
