Machinist / gunsmith friend of mine tested the torque on the barrel nut of my new 15-22 today. Performed the task 3 times. Each measurement indicate a torque value of 24.5 ft. lbs. He then (for the heck of it) used another torque wrench which had increments of 1 ft. lb. Once again he performed the task 3 times with each resulting in 25 ft. lbs. I have seen a few sources indicating S&W sets them at 20 and I found one source indicating from 20-25 ft. lbs. I reckon it's tight enough though I "painted" registration marks on the nut and a spot on the handguard.

On a regular AR I always torque the barrel nut 35 to 40 ft. lbs.

I guess 22's are different?
