barrel swapping

I know with the M&P pistols you can change between .40 to 9mm by just swapping in a S&W factory 9mm barrel in the M&P40. I was wondering if the same thing can be done with the SD40VE by just swapping in a SD9VE barrel?

It didn't work in the Sigmas and it still doesn't work for the SDVE's.

I haven't heard if it works or not on any of these models from the Sigma on up.

No proof if it works or if it doesn't and I have searched.

All I got was why, buy a new gun their cheap, won't work because of this or that.
But nobody I talked to actually tried it and I can't find no specs. on a 9mm barrel to compare it to my 40 barrel.

If anybody has dimensions on a SD9VE barrel and has a Mic. or set of calipers measure your barrel so we could see.

I'll have to get some measurements on my 40 and post them.

The .40 barrels are wider than the 9mm the mag well is larger as well. I heard 1 guy say you could mod the .40 mag to fit 9mm. All this said when you put the 9mm barrel in the slide there is a larger gap on both sides of the chamber where it meets the slide.

Bottom line I wouldn't shoot it.

All in all I'm tired of these swap questions. Use the gun as it was intended. Earlier Gen Sigmas may be able to swap parts, but not the newer Sigmas and SDs.

I'll trust your word on it if you actually tried it.

Yes we tried it. I have a SW40VE and my neighbor had the 9VE. We found nothing of the .40 fit the 9mm. Now you can fit the 9mm barrel in the .40 slide, but the 9mm barrel is pysicaly smaller than the .40. This makes for larger gaps between the barrel and slide. This makes the tolerances go out the window, you may have a bomb on your hands.

The Mags. The .40 mag is larger than the 9mm. You can fit the 9mm mag in the frame of the .40. However the 9mm mag is so loose in the .40 frame there is a chance of it falling out while firing. I have heard someone say that you could use the .40 mags but put 9mm rounds in the .40 mag. They claim you would just have to bend the ears in on the .40 mag to hold the 9mm round in.

The slides will interchange with the frames, but you still have the fitment issues with the mags.


I'm not saying it wouldn't work. You have to ask yourself if you are willing to lose a hand to find out, I'm not.


I don't see the fascination with these conversions especially with SD's and Sigmas. These guns can be found for less than $300. I can just get the other gun out of my range bag before you can swap out your conversion.

I would love to just switch barrels instead of buying a whole new gun.

I can get a barrel for 90 buks. new.

I really don't like the gun that much to buy another one just to have a different caliber, but I would buy another barrel.

I agree. I would like a drop in barrel. If the mag well was the same that would help to. If all this was feasible, and I had the means of machining. I would be making Sigma and SD barrels.

Lone Wolf used to make extended Sigma Barrels with compensating ports. Wish I was able to get one before they discontinued.
