barrel thread protector

i have a M&P 22 and wish to remove the barrel protector.
I understand it is screwed on using a M8 .75 thread.
I also understand there is a tool to unscrew it?

I see no flats or notches in the front or side. So if I had a tool I would have no place to affix it to.
I did try to gently remove it but it seems tight. I am a machinist and have a feel for these things.

Any suggestions here?

Do you have the California model? That could be your issue. Post some pics of your pistol.
