The threading shown is at the base of the barrel which connects to the upper. I just noticed it, and thought it was odd that it isn't screwed all the way in. Is this a problem or is it normal?

We can't see the entire interface between barrel and reciever. The barrel may screw into the receiver until it hits an internal stop or there may be a nut locking the barrel to the receiver ala Savage. Headcase650's explanation works too.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most .22 rimfires have barrels that slip into a machined hole and are held in place with a cross pin. The 10-22 uses a couple of machine screws to clamp the barrel in.

And I learned something new today. Thanks all for the quick and educational feedback.

The breech block is attached to the barrel and is inside the upper. That assembly slides through a stainless steel bushing that the barrel nut (or our free float hand guard adapter) slides on from the muzzle and squeezes against to keep the barrel in place.
