Barrel to ADCO--it's done, pix and range report

For threading, shortening to 14.7" and reprofiling to .485. Trying for a lightweight AR....

Edit: Barrel came in the mail today, 14 days with Alaska Priority Mail. I pinned on the flash hider making a 16.3" bbl, picked up my stashed lower receiver (I didn't want to go to the PMITA penitentiary, thank all you liberals) and headed to the range.

As pictured with Magpul AFG, MBUS, XTM rail panels and an empty mag, it's 4.775 pounds. Light.

I loaded up all eight mags and shot it today for the 200 rounds, all offhand. Noticeably more recoil for a .22. A little "jump" --not much but enough to have to reacquire the sight picture. The accuracy seems about the same.

I really really like it. Thanks, ADCO, for the quality work and ~3 day turn around.

Any ideas for another revision?

Ive thought about using them myself. I have a "post ban" bushmaster HBAR shorty with a bare muzzle...
Since they are in toledo, I could hand deliver it and pick it up.
 
I can go 14.7 with a pinned and welded flash hider to make 16"

forgive me for not understanding, but what's the point of shortening the barrel 1.3" just to bring it back to 16" with a welded flash hider and then having to pin it? JMO but it seems like that's just hurting the guns performance and making mag changes more of a pain :confused:
 
It gives the barrel a shorter OAL and cuts a bit of weight from the front end.

I'm not sure about going with a thinner profile just to save weight. The gun is already a few pounds lighter than a barebones AR, plus you'd have to step back up to fit a traditional flash hider. I'd think a heavy fluting could cut a third of the weight from the barrel without sacrificing too much on accuracy.
 
Not everything people do is logical :D

This is the gun I shoot oftenest, so I thought I'd buy it a present. I was wanting a flash hider so the bbl is coming off anyway.

It costs zero extra when threading to shorten the bbl, so rather than make the unit 1.3 inches longer than it is, I shortened.

Since it went through the mail anyway, for a mere 90 bucks more I'm guessing I can reduce the weight 40% or more by reprofiling from .667 to .485. I'll even save a buck or two in the return shipping because of the weight loss. :)

Now off to find some plastic iron sights.

Look at the MAGPUL BUIS -- Plastic?? - polymer. Great sights... proven sights in the bigger AR bros... 5.56mmm. 6.8mm, etc....

I have them on 15-22 MAGPUL edition.

OBTW - you can get set (front and rear) under $100

What a coincidence...I had an extra rear and so I just ordered a front MBUS. I liked the carry handle for hiking but a sling will do.

Besides doing weird stuff like aluminum take-down pins, I might be done. Pictures and weight in two weeks.

The barrel arrived at the ADCO shop Friday, after our splendid Alaska 6-day priority mail. Can't wait.

The MBUS sights arrived today though. 2.7 oz for the set not bad. 1st generation.

Lots of effort and expense for a few ounces? Yeah probably. They say ounces are pounds and pounds are pain. My old sights, a carry handle with a stock front sight are 11.2 oz. I might feel the half-pound difference....

Just for grins, weighed the EOTech, 9.2 oz. Wait...that's less than the carry handle with stock front and only 1.9 oz more than the stock sights. Too bad I don't like it very much.

Believe it or not I tried a target scope on the 15/22, a Millet TRS1 4x16 in a LaRue SPR mount, 44.6 oz. Nearly 3 pounds.

Pretty darn cool. What was the total price when you were done with Adco?

Barrel threading is high on my to-do list.
 
Yes I'm old. 52 years but far from disabled still. My .308 AR is 12 lbs. I hike with a 4" .500 Mag that I'm thinking weighs near this rifle. My motivation was a unique piece.
 
I like the idea of making this light rifle even lighter. Very cool, Jim.

Hey Belt_Fed, what are your thoughts on turning down the barrel or fluting?

Both of my 5.56's are just under 8 pounds with optics and a full 20-round magazine.
