Just watched this again for the umpteenth time. It still makes me smile. Known to some as "The Seven Samurai in Space", it is so hopelessly camp it's brilliant.

Robert Vaughn reprises his role in "The Magnificent Seven" but this time riding a Manta Ray shaped space fighter. George Peppard also features it what some may consider a comeback film after his dark days with alcohol. Of course, who can forget John Saxon as the evil Sador. It brings back happy memories of watching it with my sci-fi loving aunt and also with my best buddy after getting back from the pub.

Battle Beyond the Stars was made in 1980, and the only modern film that comes close is the critically panned "Wing Commander". I watch that whenever I can, too.:D

I sort of remember this movie, probably because of this glorious B movie queen. I'd like to see what she's packing.

On the hip.
Looked up the movie info and saw where James Cameron did the effects and Roger Corman directed.
May be worth another look.

One of the issues with the movie isn’t with the movie at all. It came out after Star Wars, which was technically head-and-shoulders above other period offerings.

Any love for Zardoz?

I like this one too, but no one else here cares enough to watch it even once. Video games, Star Wars, and many others have left "Battle Beyond the Stars" in obscurity. My kids laugh at the beginning and then slip away. Thanks for posting.

Never heard of it, but, after reading this thread, checked Netflix and Amazon Prime. It’s on Prime.

Kurosawa is responsible for a lot of movie plots.

I am probably in the minority but the only space/sifi show I have ever
watched was Startrek on TV. And a few minutes of Planet of the Apes
on TV. Just not my idea of an enjoyable movie. Oh yeah I just remembered, as a kid watched Buster Crabbe in some Sifi movies.

Can't resist a movie with Sybil Danning in it, but the Andy Sidaris movie Malibu Express is my favorite.

I haven't seen Battle Beyond since it was in theaters, but I remember it better than other flicks that somehow got a repeat viewing. Time to search it out and watch it again.

I mostly remember The Last Starfighter for Robert Preston riffing on his Professor Howard Hill role from The Music Man, but this time as an intergalactic con artist. Sort of. I'll have to hunt that one up too.

It is 6 AM MDT and there's nothing on TV. I think I'm going to do a Double Feature.

ETA I dug out Battle Beyond the Stars and I was wrong. I have it in VHS. That is an old movie

John Saxon, the baddie from Battle, has passed.

R.I.P. John Saxon, veteran B-movie stalwart

John Saxon used to be quite the heart throb for a lot of women. A girl I used to date in college called him "Sexy Saxon." He had his niche, but I was never sure exactly what it was. Another semi-icon has now passed into history. R.I.P. Mr. Saxon. You had a pretty good run.

John

Being a child of the 50s, I grew up on "B" sci-fi and comic books. Still love that stuff. :D
I haven't seen Battle Beyond the Stars in many years. Yet its one of those movies that tends to stick with you for some odd reason. Maybe it was Sybil Danning. She did get your attention. I may have to look that up and watch it again. ;)
The Last Starfighter has always been one of my favorites! In the early days of HBO, they used to play that one a lot. I'd watch it every chance I got. Robert Preston was a hoot! :D

Those old B - Z movies from past decades were great, silly fun. Perhaps the deadliest creature from a creature feature was The Giant Claw. Impossible that much of the audience did not die looking at the thing.

The Last Starfighter has always been a fun sci-fi entertainment. Sentimental for me since it was playing on cable just before and during the time I started my first job. Hard to imagine that was 35 years ago, where did the years go?

Really hokey but still entertaining. Especially that cow-shaped spaceship with the matronly voice.
