I've seen news video of Prince Harry in Afghanistan and I think he had his bayonet fixed in some scenes. This was on the ground, of course, just patrolling or going about normal business. His main role is as a combat chopper pilot/gunner, I think on an Apache.
When in his shelter, a rifle was on the wall.
He was also wearing a Browning 9mm, sometimes on his vest; sometimes in a leg holster.
I think USAF Security Forces still use bayonets in combat zones. They pull a lot of convoy duty as well as being responsible for base defense.
As an aside, an El Salvadoran soldier in Iraq was the lone survivor of his unit, cut to pieces by insurgents. Out of ammo, he drew a lockblade folding knife and charged the enemy, killing or wounding several. They were so astounded by his fury that he escaped and received his country's highest medal. I can't recall where I read that, maybe in a knife title. Anyone else remember it? The mass media seldom even mention our allies. Sometimes, they just mention NATO casualties, not whether they're ours, Brit, Aussie, German, Czech, Canadian, etc.
I recall the British Lt. who bayoneted several Iraqis. I was glad to see him mentioned above. I think he got four of the enemy that way, no mean feat with a SAR-80.
One of my favorite scenes in, "We Were Soldiers" was the bayonet charge that finally drove the NVA from the field.
Teddy Roosevelt was right to correct the original M-1903 rod bayonet to a knife style. No President since has known much about such things. I think bayonet use should never become obsolete. Sometimes it works wonders.
