MY QUESTION TO YOU U.S. MILITARY KNOWLEDGABLE FOLKS.

Do we still issue bayonets to marines, soldiers or seaman? I was under the impression that infantry still use bayonets on their rifles, if needed.

All the best and an advance thanks for your answer.

I'm told that the Marines still issue bayonets, along with instruction on their effective use. I don't know about the other branches.

We had the old M7 bayonet for the M16 in the USAF and then later the M9 which was a clunker IMO. Never used them for much. There was a bayonet training course as recent as the mid 80s for the Security Police as they were then called, but can't say about now...been retired since 2003.

we still did bayonet training in OSUT in 2008, but as a 19k i was issued an M4 anyway, so it was kinda a moot exercise.

This picture is from the Marine Times and shows US Marines training with New Zealand forces and is current (June 23, 2012). Bayonets are definitely still in use.

I've seen news video of Prince Harry in Afghanistan and I think he had his bayonet fixed in some scenes. This was on the ground, of course, just patrolling or going about normal business. His main role is as a combat chopper pilot/gunner, I think on an Apache.
When in his shelter, a rifle was on the wall.

He was also wearing a Browning 9mm, sometimes on his vest; sometimes in a leg holster.

I think USAF Security Forces still use bayonets in combat zones. They pull a lot of convoy duty as well as being responsible for base defense.

As an aside, an El Salvadoran soldier in Iraq was the lone survivor of his unit, cut to pieces by insurgents. Out of ammo, he drew a lockblade folding knife and charged the enemy, killing or wounding several. They were so astounded by his fury that he escaped and received his country's highest medal. I can't recall where I read that, maybe in a knife title. Anyone else remember it? The mass media seldom even mention our allies. Sometimes, they just mention NATO casualties, not whether they're ours, Brit, Aussie, German, Czech, Canadian, etc.

I recall the British Lt. who bayoneted several Iraqis. I was glad to see him mentioned above. I think he got four of the enemy that way, no mean feat with a SAR-80.

One of my favorite scenes in, "We Were Soldiers" was the bayonet charge that finally drove the NVA from the field.

Teddy Roosevelt was right to correct the original M-1903 rod bayonet to a knife style. No President since has known much about such things. I think bayonet use should never become obsolete. Sometimes it works wonders.

Which rifles do the New Zealanders use? Doesn't look like an SAR-80 bayonet fixed. The Aussies have Steyrs and some M-16's, I think. I've seen their troops in East Timor with M-4's and H-K USP pistols.

I think the main reason for the lack of bayonet training, is that we don't have an acceptable platform to mount it to. A 9 pound, 40 inch long rifle, w/bayonet, would be much more formidable in hand to hand, than a short, light M4. Gosh, you'd be in machete range.

If I remember correctly the Army stopped bayonet training several years ago along with long distance running. Found both were not required on the modern battlefield.
I still to this day remember: Butt stroke, parry, thrust....now before ya'll go pervert on me......1968 bayonet training with the M-14 :)
