I think a .32 ACP would suffice, maybe ,25 ACP in a pinch.

My Buddy Milt had trouble with that treed Black Bear.
He was using 357 Winchester Silvertips.
Not much penetration.
But it made a beautiful rug!
The color was a deep red Cinnamon.
It was the only bear meat I ever ate.
May be a a acquired taste!

It makes edible pepperoni, but not my thing.

A 357 is just dandy on our smallish NM bears.

Still have my Teddy Bear slept with as a toddler in 50's displayed bookcase. Wife patched few seams. Love that bear...is this unhealthy?

So a big bear ordered a beer in the bar in Bozeman, Montana. The bartender said "We don't sell beers to bears in bars in Bozeman". The bear became quite upset!

The bears I shot all went into burger or sausage. Saw a photo taken outside a meat market in Leadville circa 1880's. The was a pricing sign in the window. Mountain sheep, elk, deer, goose duck etc., all different prices. The highest price meat they advertised was bear. As you said, it must be an acquired taste. I used the early Winchester Silvertips in a 45 ACP, 185 grain hollow points to shoot a doe antelope. Range was under 35 yards. I shot her 8 times. She didn't even flinch. Finally died. I retrieved either 6 or 7 of the bullets from her. Massive expansion, almost no penetration. Her live weight probably around a hundred pounds.
