Before I break up these stocks....

Are these anything special or were they removed from anything special?

The S/N appears to be 52179 but I won't swear the first digit is accurate as it is really hard to read.

These are beat up, chipped and I think the right stock may have been re-checkered.

I need a set of 1/2" medallions for a project, but if the consensus is NOT to break them up, I won't.

If the consensus is to break them up, where might I have the medallions replated?

Thanks.

That seems like a lot of effort for a set of stock medallions. Before I destroyed anything S&W, I would first see if anyone had a set for sale. Especially since you then will have to pay to have them re-plated as you state.

You could probably then sell the stocks here in the accessories forum and recoup the money you spent on the medallions. ;)

Those appear to be pre-war N frame magnas. In good condition they are quite dear to acquire. I don't know how restorable your set is. Hopefully, some of the stock restoration folks could tell you.

They are pre war Magna stocks. They could have came on a Reg Mag, 38/44 HD or OD, 2nd or 3rd model 44 HE, etc.

While they aren't great, I'd have a hard time pushing the medallions out of them. If you need a set of medallions, I have about 10 sets I've collected from severely beat service stocks

I've had WTB adds on three different forums (including this one) off and on for months and this is the first set I've come up with thus far and they didn't come from here surprisingly. Seems like either I'm not that lucky, they aren't out there or people are holding onto them.

Indeed they are, and they were hard to find. No idea what they are worth in this shape. I've thought about restoration as well but I don't know where I'd be cost/benefit wise. I've got a couple of emails to send in that regard.

IMHO Those are worth restoring. The checkering can be freshened, gouges and cracks can be repaired. Pre-war N-Frame Magnas are not easy to come by

There are several folks here on the forum that do excellent stock restoration. Do a search and see what you find.

PS: Contact DWFAN, he does outstanding work

I have emails out to DWFan as well as Keith Brown already. My quick search turned up more refinishers than it did restorers so I'm open to more recommendations.

There is a gentleman who goes by swamprat over on the Colt forum, he is a magician at restoring grips.

Be patient. This is a busy time for all and vacations sometimes cause mail to be answered weeks later. I have seen photos of Paul's work and one showing a chip repair was IMPOSSIBLE to detect. I am a carpenter by trade and I was amazed by the quality.

DWFAn did a pair of non-relieved K Frame stocks for me and I couldn't believe they were the same ones when I got them back. I don't think you could go wrong, and the price was pretty reasonable.
