Before I buy is the 15-22 worth it?

I bought my 15-22 about 5 years ago when the S&W retail store (and public range) was still open in Springfield, MA (miss them both!). I bought the free state version and had it shipped back to FL. It is a fun, highly reliable shooter. I haven't shot it beyond the 50 yard range, but even with a red dot and no magnification, it does a great job. FTFs are quite rare and it will shoot about any ammo. I also have a 10/22 with the tactical UTG folding stock. I like it a lot, but the 15-22 was great out of the box. To get the 10/22 to where I wanted it to be, I bought the Ruger BX-25 trigger with it's lighter, smoother 4 lb. pull. I really like it, but it did add another $90. Get the 15-22, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

thats so true with a Good red dot and laser its amazing how good it works i took my 22 camping i was shooting cans with just the laser not evening using the red dot lol after a lot of hard work i finished my mods to it adding a free float hand gaurd etc Love this gun

The one overriding reason I bought mine is the fact all the controls work exactly the same as a AR-15. I can learn and maintain the same "muscle memory" needed to run the AR-15 platform at a lot better price than running 5.56 all the time. Plus it's a real hoot ta shoot!

I doubt you'll find too many folks here that wouldn't recommend the 15-22... but then again, this is a 15-22 forum. :D

I guess it depends on the lady. She obviously is a shooter, since you've been instructed to get her a gun. This is my favorite gun I own even though it is my least accurate. Where it shines is ease of use, being based on an AR platform and relatively cheap ammo. For lots of ladies, kids & first time shooters, it shines because a 22 doesn't kick and is not very loud. Put a suppressor on it and then it is very quiet.

It is accurate enough for what it is designed to do... plink. Yes, it is accurate enough to take the occasional small game and plenty accurate to hit targets and soda cans. It would be my last choice to put meat on the table but that is not a concern as I have other guns for that. This is my fun gun & my trainer for my ARs. It is so similar to a real AR that the training is valuable and much cheaper. This also is the gun that I use to introduce new shooters to the sport. 100% of the time, all new shooters have truly enjoyed it and left with big smiles.

Actually he's saying the gun will be for him and his fiancé told him to buy it for himself as a gift from her.

Been shooting for 55 years and owned scores of guns during that time including many .22s. I have .22s that are much more accurate than the S&W15-22 and ARs that are much more powerful, but the gun I shoot the most is my 15-22. I've had it for about 5 years and bought another for my son last year.
It's just so much fun and economical to shoot that it gets about 90% of my rifle usage and I have 10 other rifles.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to add another 'thumbs up' for the 15-22. I'm purely a recreational shooter/plinker and this thing is as fun as the reviews and youtube videos say it is! Even if you get a bad price it's a good deal!

I bought the PC 15-22 and the only issue is in the manual is S&Ws list of non recommended 22 ammo, which may limit your 22 ammo selection due to availibility of that ammo these days. But the regular 15-22 should do you well, and I have the 9 Shield, can't go wrong with that either.

You can use any 22lr ammo in your PC 15-22. DON'T use CCI Stingers, the brass is too long for the chamber. I have shot anything I can get my hands on thru mine. The Performance Center is just more finicky about the ammo it likes.

I think the question we have to ask ourselves is not, "Is it worth having?" but rather, "Is it worth not having?" I haven't' found many guns more fun own than that one.

"I've been told to go buy a gun for a wedding present from my fiancé."
FIRST: Congrats on finding the perfect woman!

I have to echo the comments of most other members; the 15-22 is a great trainer, is reliable, and very addictive to shoot!

My first experience with the 15-22 was about 6 or 7 years ago. I was at a range and a buddy of mine showed up with it. I ended up shooting it the rest of the afternoon. After he refused my offer to buy it then and there, I ended up picking one up for myself.

This gun ALWAYS goes to the range with me, and ALWAYS gets shot. As for round count, i'm probably close to 10,000 rounds. The only draw back is that the ammo goes so fast. I can't say I've had any issues with it at all.

As for mods, the only thing I've I've done is add a el cheapo scope from BassPro, a basic web sling, and picked up a few extra mags..

I've been told to go buy a gun for a wedding present from my fiancé. I've been torn between the 15-22 and the shield 9mm. I already have a full size m and p 9 so the 15-22 will be much more fun for us to shoot together so I'm leaning that way. I've been looking around the forum and don't see anyone regretting buying it so it seems to be a good purchase. Anything I should know before picking one up? Also even though in just a 22 caliber it'd be good enough to take care of a nuisance squirrel or groundhog or two, right? I don't intend to hunt with it, just for fun at the range. Thanks

In the end your going to have to buy both anyway.

Best 22 based AR platform there is, but aside from shooting it, which is a blast, it allows you to customize it with the veritable sea of AR parts available and make it truly your own.

Ditto. I own 2. The most fun one can have with an M4 style .22lr carbine. Have installed aftermarket parts: trigger, charging handle, fire selector, grip, stock, sights, red dot sight. Can't go wrong.

Well, if I were going to get a fun plinker 22, I'd go with the Ruger 10/22 take down model. I don't think the M&P 15-22 is worth it. Get her the Shield first and then later down the road the Ruger.

Sorry but you asked.

I agree with Caj for an all around semi auto .22 go with a Ruger 10/22 ....... that said the 15-22 is a great gun and a great AR training aid/gun IMO

I Owen both the 10/22 and 15-22. It could just be my military background, but the 15-22 is just great. I like the 10/22 but the 15-22 just eats anything and everything and look cool doing it. My wife likes the 10/22, but loves my 15-22. I was given the 10/22 to her, but she wants I 15-22 to match mine. She said it just reals more real to her.

Thanks that info that's also in the manuel, as is sub-sonic, have you fired any sub-sonic ammo in your PC ? Wondering if it'll work in the PC

Yes, it fires and will not cause any problems other then turning you rifle into a T-handled bolt action rifle. Sub-sonic doesn't have enough pop to cycle the action reliably. Suppressor helps, but still not 100%. When I wanna use the can and quiet things down I just use standard velocity ammo which cycles perfectly.
