Besides acting and being comedians, had sidelines for income.

Moe owned a furniture-making business that did good business. Collectively, the Three Stooges had also a law firm. Do you know what they were called?

Many Actors and Sports Stars, buy or start companies to invest the wealth. The problem is they should stick to what they know and do best! Locally there have been several restaurants by sports stars that went belly up. The first I remember was a burger/diner own by Jerry Lucas, didn't make it a year (mid to later 60's)!

Restaurants used to be common investments for various celebrities and sports stars. I had a first cousin who many years ago was a Big League catcher and also tried his hand at the restaurant business. He lost his rear end quickly. In fact, I believe the restaurant industry has the highest two-year failure rate of about any business you could ever choose to get into. You just cannot be an absentee owner.

Many people take their money to invest outside of their carrier and sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesnt.

Mike Piazza was a catcher for the LA and has had a successful car dealership franchise in my area for the last 20 years.

Michael Jordan has had a high end steakhouse in Times Square for like a decade.

It's like any business. Sometimes you fail

Mel Farr had a car dealership and used to fly around Detroit in a cape. "Mel Farr, Superstar, for a far better deal...." "...and they can not fly eitherrrrrrrrrr!"

Jerome had a sad story....

'Curly' was first rate hard party man and a champion woman chaser. He was actually proud of his hair and mustache and didn't like having to shave for the Curly part. One time a woman asked if he was really Curly and when he said, 'Yes', she hit him in the stomach. He partied so hard his health started to fail and his blood pressure went up. The brothers tried to help him and get him to slow down a little but he was unstoppable while their schedule and his bad marriages wore him down. He spent time in several hospitals and homes, but not enough to reverse his deterioration and he suffered strokes.

Samuel (Shemp) was a bit of an enigma. He didn't come across on the screen well at all but live and in person many said he was the funniest person they ever met.

Louis Fineberg (Larry) took up boxing in his early years and actually won a championship bout. He was very accomplished on the violin, though he was rarely seen playing seriously.

From what I've read, the Stooges didn't make much off their films. Jules White, the producer, kept them in the dark as to what their films really made. Actors didn't have the latitude they've got these days, they were under contract to the studio. Popular as they were, the Stooges didn't have the juice super stars like Tracy and Hepburn had. Studio said jump, most actors, like the Stooges, asked how high?

I don't know if this is true or not, but I once heard that Moe insisted on paying for all of his expenses, no matter how small or trivial, by personal check. Once the bank returned his cancelled checks, he carefully stored them, and then used them to "pay" for things for years.

Imagine owning a real autograph from Moe Howard on a check he used to pay for a haircut that he gave you in exchange for a meal from your restaurant. I always thought that if that story wasn't true, it should have been. The Three Stooges gave my siblings and I hours of entertainment when we were young. Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!

Regards,

Dave

Plus it doesn't hurt being a billionaire. Though Nolan Ryan isn't //I think// yet a billionaire, he has a chain of restaurants called: Ryan's--which are actually good. Bad thing is, they are all-you-can-eat places. Plus Ryan has his own brand of sausage out and other ventures.

I think part of the success is not only name recognition, but name likability.

You just stop that now, you hear?

Pablo Picasso allegedly paid for everything by check. He would always draw a little doodle on it. No one would ever cash them, as they were original Picassos.

Jules White was indeed a liar but, the one who made the most off the Stooges was a cad by the name of cohn? or cohen? that shafted the stooges. Also, during the very lean period between the short subjects and their movies, that guy had Moe delivering lunches.
