Best j-frame grips for CCW?

Looking for some new grips for my CCW 442. It came with the uncle mikes rubber grips and they are snagging and sticking to my clothing so I am looking for a alternative. Thinking about getting some lg-105 or lg-405 but also looking for less expensive alternatives. Hip grips are out of the question since I like in Ohio and the firearm must be in a holster when being carried, if this was not in place I would probably try a set of those out. Please post pics of your set ups as well if possible. Thanks!

I tried a few grips for my 642 and settled for these Badgers. It's shorter than the combat grip, but longer than the boot grip. Even my little finger grips the grip.

I was gonna suggest the Uncle Mike's but I see you are already dissatisfied with them. I don't think they are fit for anything larger than a J Frame for the reason you mention, but I always felt they are perfect for the J Frame. They do not extend beyond the back or bottom of the grip frame, which is what you want for maximum concealment. It has just the right amount of filler behind the trigger guard to facilitate proper pointing and control. And since the J grip frames are so small, I like having that bit of stickiness that the rubber affords so I can get a good grip on it. I occasionally carry my 940 in a pancake holster and never have any problems with clothing sticking to it. It's never a problem during pocket carry.

I have a set of Eagle Secret Service grips that are the same size and shape as the Uncle Mike's but they are a bit too slippery for me. Wood looks nice but I find it's a bit too hard to control on a J Frame. The Uncle Mike's are not made anymore and are increasingly difficult to find. I recently found another set for $5 in the discard pile at Cabela's and I couldn't be happier.

Just a suggestion, before you invest in wood or plastic grips you may want to try out a pair before you buy. I have rubber Uncle Mikes on my J's and really liked the way they fit my hand and I can hit with them too! Like you, I didn't care for the way they grab your shirt so I bought a pair of the larger wood S&W grips for the J frame. They really felt nice in my hand but every round I shot moved the gun around in my hand and I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I never could overcome that, so I went back to the Uncle Mikes. The snagging doesn't really bother me anymore.

What works for me better than anything, are magna stocks w/ a Tyler T Trip. Easy to hold, easy to conceal, easy to draw and most important easy to shoot.

Anyone have the altamont round supers in black/siver?

If you're ever at a gun show, look for some Safariland finger groove grips.
They were made of a composite and came in black or wood grain.
I had the gunsmith at King's Gunworks in Glendale, CA cut them flush with the bottom.
They are really all the other grips rolled into one.
Non slip, checkered so slightly you hardly feel it,
indexes in your hand the same way every time and doesn't catch on fabric.
Best of all, they were not expensive.
I bought 2 black and 1 wood grain over 25 years ago.

Bought my 642 six years ago, came with the Crimson Trace grip from the factory and has the S&W logo...works for me. It's not as pretty as some of the others, but I didn't buy it as a show off gun.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I decided to go a bit old school and ordered a pair of s&w oem magnas from midway. Gonna try those out, maybe order a t-grip for the setup. Any idea what the t-grip current turnaround is these days?

I ordered two J frame T Grips on 1 Feb 2011. The check cleared five days later. Still waiting and from what I understand, I'll be waiting for several more months. eBay is an excellent source for J frame grips. T Grips go from about $50.00 to as high as $104.

I've got a set of Uncle Mikes. They sit in a drawer, permanently. Not only do they snag, but they aren't as comfortable as the stock magnas that came on my J frames made in the '60s and '70s.

The best solution is a magna sized grip that is NOT smooth, AND to combine these grips with a Tyler T-grip. VERY comfortable and easy to shoot, conceal and carry!!! No secrets here.

The Tylers work with the good ol' stock S&W grips, called "Magnas." as well as magna-shaped Elk stags such as these. Same feel, grip and comfort!

First, here's my "always" (always on me) revolver, a 1971 Model 37 Airweight with the requisite Tyler and American Elk Stags from Grashorn Gunworks of Greeley, CO:

and my steel framed 1964 Model 36 w/Tyler and original S&W stocks.

My wife also prefers stock magnas on her square butt Model 37 Airweight (also a golden oldie from 1971), with a Tyler-T of course. She's recoil sensitive but can shoot even +Ps in that 15 oz. M37 with the Tylers installed.

There's a very good reason why so many of us love magnas w/Tylers. Yep . . . slim, non-snagging, grip-maintaining under recoil, and comfortable to shoot!

Nothing else will do for me!

Magnas I ordered from Midway came in and all I can say is WOW! These grips feel so good in my hand and the wood and checkering is full of antisnag goodness. Now just waiting on my tgrips to arrive, then it will be even better. I think I found a winner.

PS, there was also a small package in my mailbox today from Mr. Mika as well. Loving this Mika pocket holster already, and its not even near being broke in at all yet!
