Best reference book?

Hello,

I only own one S&W revolver (a ~ 1980 M57) and am picking up my next one on Thursday (early 50's k-22 combat masterpiece). I am looking for a good reference book to buy to help me keep everything straight. You have to admit that keeping all of the model numbers straight can be a bit bewildering - not to mention understanding the various front sights, grips, and other options that are available.

So...what book(s) do you recommend?

Look for The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, currently in its third edition. That's pretty much the "bible" for S&Ws today. There are many other good books, but that should probably be the first you get.

Agreed. The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has the answers to a huge percentage of the questions asked here. Anyone with even a small interest in Smith and Wesson should have it.

Most definitely the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition. It is quite a bargain for such a well researched volume.

I finally had to breakdown and buy the "Book of Colt Firearms, 3rd edition" and it set me back nearly $150! So the $30-$35 the Smith book costs is a great deal!

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson is the definite must have book if you're gonna' ride with the brand.

because I checked recently and new condition, third editions of the Standard Catalog referred to above could be had for under $30 including shipping costs.

While I'm going to the trouble of having stuff shipped, I will probably buy a Blue Book too. The one I use is a couple years old.

I agree completely. Once you start reading, it's hard to stop. Check your 2nd hand bookstores for older editions and with luck you might find "History of Smith and Wesson" by Roy Jinks, another good read.

"History of Smith and Wesson" is a fabulous book. Also recommended is another Roy Jinks book, "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945, a Handbook for Collectors." A reference similar to the "Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson," it goes into greater detail about the early revolvers. There are usually used copies of both available on Amazon.
