I am new to handguns and have only bought range rounds for practicing my shooting technique with my M&P 40c but not sure what to get for S/D and or H/D, hollow point, frangible IDK??? What are you using and or like to use? Thanks

Copper plated or jacketed, 185grain bullets. This is common and inexpensive. You'll be able to use the same bullet for practice and actual self defense.
Hollow point bullets are designed to expand as they hit the bad guy. This helps them transfer more energy to the target and not over penetrate. This is a good thing for self defense. They may or may not expand.
A frangible bullet is designed to break into thousands of tiny pieces as it hits the target. The main idea is to prevent over penetration. They will potentially do more damage because they spread the energy out as they break up. If they work, they are a great self defense round. They are crazy expensive.
The problem with over penetration is you don't want to shoot the innocent that is behind your target. I don't think this is a big concern with a .40S&W. It is not a high penetration round.
Personally, I place more value on shot placement than bullet expansion. I use regular ball ammo. The idea is that if you put two into the right place, it will stop any bad guy no matter the caliber.
My post was directed at the OP. I wasn't making any comment on your post. I hope it didn't read that way.I was alluding to all copper, not copper plated like Berry's. Quite a bit difference in the price.
