Best single rifle gun case?

I have ordered a high dollar rifle. I want to get a single rifle case for it. I feel compelled to get something better than ordinary (but I'm not going nuts like buying a leather covered case).

Y'all have any recommendations on a really good rifle case? I'm thinking $250-$300. Not to say I couldn't go cheaper. I have an old SKB case that is very good.

A nice gun should get a nice case.

Not sure what style you're looking for, but Brack Wilson at Patriot Cases make some very fine protective cases. I use one for my long range rifle, built like a tank.

While the plastic hard cases will usually offer good protection, they fall way short in the "looks" department - at least to me. For my high end & take-down guns I use a leather hard case from Browning (or similar) and for non take-downs & for hunting trips or regular trips to the Range I'll use LL Bean or Cabela's soft Canvas type cases. They offer reasonable protection and don't take up too much room while still looking good (IMO).

The main reason I mentioned "looks" is for a high end gun you kind of want a descent looking case. If your Rifle is really high end, you can get a custom leather case - hard or soft depending on your likes.

I have a few take-down guns that might not be super high end, but they are family heirlooms and invaluable to me. For some of those I have made a custom case out of an old style Browning Luggage case that was meant for Browning Superposed Shotguns. You can find them on ebay and custom make your interior. You could also make one from scratch is you have the patience, tools and skill.

There are a few gents who bench-make custom gun cases from oak, leather, etc. Realize though, they can easily run in the 4 figure range and take about 6 months. So it comes down to the main purpose - is it for max protection - go with the Pelican. If it's more for great looks, order a custom one.

If it's for storage, or shipping, look at pelican, they make a nice hard case. Cabelas used to have a nice hard case also. For a safe gun, that only gets transported to and from. I'd look at a nice soft side case from Cabelas, they have quality stuff.

My Savage BA-110 in 338 LM is 52" long. I use the Midway "Dragbag" soft case to store and carry it. Without going Custom it was the longest I could find 56 years ago when I was looking.

My Savage BA-10 in 308 Win will fit in a Storm/Pelican rifle case, if the stock is fully retracted. 26" barrels and fairly large muzzle brakes make these guns problematic.

My oldest son's Remington 700 PSP is a surplus sniper rifle from the Ohio Highway Patrol. It came in a fitted Pelican case set up for the day scope on the rifle and the Night scope detached (and sadly missing) and a space for two 20 round boxes of ammo.

I have 8 of the Browning "Luggage" cases for my O/U shotguns, they are very nice for storage and transport, but lack any protection from Water! These now run in the $200+ range. But they fit in a row inside the closet (with room for other cases), 8 Pelican cases would be at least twice that wide!

I have had the big heavy aluminum cases and hated them. The hard plastic cases I didn't like much better but if you're shipping a gun they are probably the way to go. They just seem so heavy and awkward putting in the back seat of the car and possibly scratching the interior. My favorite case for a scoped rifle is made by Dokosil and it is a heavy fabric case with hard plastic/polyer around the muzzle, action, and scope. I'm pretty sure you could drop it on concrete right on the scope and it wouldn't hurt it a bit. Not really elegant but very functional and protective.

FWIW I would NOT store ANY gun, much less a high dollar one in ANY case. Period. I would store it in a gun sock inside a humidity controlled safe-or in the closet behind your wife's sh....stuff. My gun case is a battered sun bleached, mud stained Boyt with the strap halfway chewed by a squirrel. It does the job of transporting my shottie (sorry couldn't resist ). Because I don't spend money needlessly on cases, I can afford nice guns (like a SBE II) to go inside them. Never will forget one time years ago (lead shot days) when this old cajun I was hunting with showed up wearing an old stained jacket, old mud caked hip waders and an old wool cap carrying a battered old soft case. Nary a stitch of camo on him. Well we were sitting in a blind together and he pulls out a well used but well kept Model 21 heavy duck gun and proceeded to absolutely SMOKE the ducks! That my friends is style!

For travel or airline transport, you can't beat the Pelican cases.

The Kalispell Nation used to make the most beautiful hard cases I have ever seen. I always thought that if I ever could afford one I would spend the money. I've heard they sold the business but the new owners have kept up the quality work. You could Google Kalispell Gun Case and see what comes up, they used to be top notch in this part of the country.

Pelican cases are wonderful for heavy duty use, but are quite heavy for everyday range use. Mine is 24 pounds empty. For airlines use, perfect. For casual use, overkill.

For a breakdown gun, try Negrini, made in Italy.

Howdy,

I have similar Pelican cases.

Not wanting to cut up the foam, I went to Home Depot and got plain 3 inch foam
2 ft wide and 6 ft long for $25 and cut that up and saved the original Pelican foam.

Once we get into our new home and New gun safe(s),

I plan to sell the once used Pelican cases.
