Model 25--Model 27--Model 29 Why ? Pretty much covers all the bases for anything I would ever want to do.

Define "newer" . . . .

not anything made at present that turns my crank enough that the itch couldn't be scratched with something made before 1990 . . . .

3 revolvers

i agree with fred, no lock guns ever, my picks would be,pre lock 342 or 642, model 66 4 inch, model 625 in 45 acp.

"Newer"? Ruger SP-101, 3-inch bbl, Ruger GP-100, four-inch bbl., and the discontinued GP- 100 with six-inch half lug bbl.

No MIM parts, no lock, and great ruggedness and reliability.
Reasonable prices usually, too. Also great versatility. (All in .357.)

Might skip the six-inch and get two of one of the others.

I don't even consider current S&W handguns. To be sure, some here don't share that opinion. But I'm not answering on their behalf. ;)

He said NEWER guns. Otherwise, I'd agree on the M-66 and add a Model 60-7 and a M-60-4. And, I'd sorely miss an M-686 made before they drilled the top strap for a scope mount.

Wish the OP had defined, "newer"...

If I already had a pocket protector, the choice would be:

4" 617 Fun... hyper fun!
4" 627 Pro - covers .38/.357M needs...
4" 625JM - 'Big bore' fun!

And - I couldn't care less whether my revolvers have the IL or not.

Sadly, no existing pocket protector would mean I'd need a 642 first - and, sadly, one of those 4"-er's would have to go. The horror!

PS Those three 4"-ers have proven to be my favorites - my frequent range bag riders - the revolvers I clean most often. Plus, they cover my ballistic needs!

617 4"
686 4"
629 5" maybe a 6"?
Is a j frame small enough to make it only gun number 3.5 not #4?

A 310 or 325 for carry & home protection

A Classic Line Model 29 6 1/2" blued

A Classic Line Model 18 Combat Masterpiece .22

those pretty much could cover everything from plinking to hunting to defense.

Two of my four "newer" Smiths are a 60-4 and a 60-7, so we're pretty much in ageement ;). The other two are a 63-4 and a 642-1--either of which is worthy of a spot in the top three.

But I'm a J frame junkie. I don't hunt with handguns, nor do I shoot competitively, and there are no predatory critters in my neck of the woods that are likely to try to eat me. A revolver for me is something that can be slipped in a pocket or glovebox or ride lightly on my belt while I'm doing something else To be fair, it would be tough to justify a "top 3 newer" list that didn't include a 686 variant.

8 3/8" 500......the heavy artillery.

5" 627 8-shot or 4" 625, a definite tossup.....all-around shooting.

4" 617 10-shot.....the .22!

If I could only own 3 or 4 - it would be concealed carry oriented. It's actually the one's that I own:

1. 337pd, bobbed hammer
2. 637, bobbed hammer
3. m10 snubby
4. (yes, I added one) 4" M19

"newer" guns meaning w/lock?
I'd say: 442, 4" 686, and a 6" 629

I agree.

Carry/self defense = 442

House gun/target fun/ carry = 4" 686

Hunting/target fun/ house gun = 6" 629

A fella could be well served with these three.

model 29 mountain gun
model 29 classic dx
model 29 3"

when you've got a 44, you don't need nothin else. at least, i don't.

2 1/2" Steel frame 44 Mag.

4" 44 Mag MG, or the Classic

6 1/2" 44 Mag Mod 29, the Classic

I would go with the 3 size 3 caliber.

M317 in .22 LR
Bodyguard 38
M686 plus

Covers my needs, but that's an AWFUL lot of money. I could get many more semiautos for the same amount of money.

Newer than what?

I would certainly not like to be limited to three revolvers, but I'll give you the top three. However, for reasons which will be evident, I consider six to be the rock-bottom minimum, and that's revolvers. I'd add a Browning HP and a Series 80 Colt (or a ParaOrd) to that, although an excuse could be made for having just one auto.

1. A Model 42, because it can be carried in some pockets that larger revolvers won't fit into. If you don't reliably use the grip safety, a 37 with a bobbed hammer is better, possibly even with a square butt. Any of these guns will also carry well in a Renegade ankle holster.

2. A 2" Model 15, because mine is VERY accurate and fast with Rogers/Safariland grips, and is very easy to conceal. A 2" Model 12 or 10 is also a strong possibility, but I find the sights on my 15 to be a bit faster, and they have never worn on my cover garment, whether "shoot-me" vest or sport jacket.

3. A real gun (although the M15 is close with the "FBI" load). If you ever go where may be bear, a 3" or 4" .44 Magnum, whatever will conceal. If not, a .45 ACP (/.45 AR) of the same size.

4. A good .22 revolver. Although you may prefer an auto, which is certainly OK, you should have a revolver, also, if for nothing but instructional purposes.

5. See 2. You should probably have a steel gun and an aluminum gun, both, unless you shoot the aluminum one just as well as the steel.

6. See 3. You should probably have both.

Some people may feel that a .357 is suitable for 3, above, or even also 2. I have no real argument with them, but at present I like my choices better.

The autoloader is for when you are afraid that the Chinese hordes may overrun your position, and you can't get to your EBR.
