BIG Flashlight!!

Saw an interesting flashlight before Christmas. They were all aluminum, shaped like a small baseball bat, and had LED bulbs. I almost bought one, but passed. Wish now I had just for the novelty of it.

I have one of those. Works great!

Shore Patrol officers do not carry nightsticks. If, however, one is afraid of the dark, he might carry a six-cell Maglite. It carries quite comfortably and inconspicuously up the left sleeve of a peacoat, and is, after all, only a flashlight. The chances of needing it are, of course, minuscule. Even the likelihood of using one as an enlisted SP is rather small. Doesn't mean it didn't happen once to me.

I also owned a long Safariland (?) Kel-lite, which was originally designed to be a 5-cell light with a long aluminum rod to make up the difference between 5 cells and the actual length of the night stick battery container. I altered mine to 6 cells, mainly to have an even number of cells and common Xenon replacement bulbs. While that shifted the balance slightly to the rear, I still found it advantageous to replace the nickle-plated brass frontmost ring with the standard black-plated aluminum ring. Nice baton, but I never actually had occasion to carry it.

6 cell looks to go in the category of crew served flash light. The LED conversions seem to have a wide range of prices. I found one with a Cree brand emitter and that is a very good unit. Found it at a Batteries and Bulbs store.

Ha, try an 8 cell! I have that and a 6, though I haven’t even tried to use them in years. The tubes would make formidable grenade launchers.

Both gifts from my ex. Just like her, the damn things were heavy wouldn’t work when I needed them to.

I no longer buy expensive flashlights. For years I thought it was just bad luck, but wife #2 has convinced me I emit some sort of freak magnetic field which completely destroys flashlights once I’ve used them a couple of times.

I’m better off with disposable glow sticks.

As an old cop that used to carry a six cell one I can tell you what I called them.

It's a steel pipe filled with lead :)

I had a C cell 6 battery Kel Light. I know its hard to believe nowadays, but it used to be A-OK to smack someone with one of these if the situation called for it. The C cell was perfect for this - much handier than the D cell.

I once destroyed a 4 battery D cell Mag Light when a guy ran from an arrest at a housing project in New Orleans. I threw it like a tomahawk and tried to factor in the right lead, but he cut a corner at exactly the right time and my light hit the brick building and detonated. My partners were inside and ran out, thinking from the noise I had shot at the guy.

Now lights are smaller, brighter, and far less useful.

The conversion arrived and I checked it out last night. It seems brighter and the beam can be focused.

Somebody owes me some money. I was reading this last night and drinking a beer or 2. This morning, I got an email from Amazon telling me that my LED conversion kit is headed my way.

I have 3 or 4 Maglites that were factory LED and one older bulb type. Looks like it will soon be LED.
