About eight years ago, my son got one and "The Wonders of the B.G.E." was all that I heard. I thought, "What's the big deal? A grill is a grill."
But unbeknowst to me, he conspired with my wife and daughter to get me one for a major birthday. That was seven years ago and I have been eating great food and my words ever since.
I use it year round about 2-3 times a week. You can grill a steak with searing heat... then immediately lower the temp to cook through as you like. You can bake, you can roast, you can slow smoke a brisket or pork butt at 200 degrees for 20 hours on a load of charcoal.
Several years ago he got me a "Stoker" for a Christmas present. This is a thermostatically controlled blower that lets you bake, broil or smoke at an consistant temp without intervention.
My BGE has had constant use and requires virtually no upkeep. It's been on my deck for these seven years and I've only replaced a $30 fire grate that sits under the coals.
You use natural charcoal vs brickettes which gives all your food a great flavor. Since the BGE seals off air tight, when done you close the vents and the charcoal goes out virtually immediately. This means you use minimal charcoal each time and don't have a lot of ashes.
I know that some people complain about the initial price, but the cost on the long hall is minimal. I find it funny that so many folks on the forum will squack about the price of a BGE but clearly see the advantage of a S&W. In both, you get what you pay for over something less.
Just my experience and opinions.
(BTW, I have the large model - not the super large... and it's great for my requirements.)
