Howdy folks! Hopefully some of the oldtimers on here remember me. I'm Steve Wice, and wanted to fill you in on some recent life changes. I had to retire on disability last year due to my heart and diabetes. Sure gets lonely with everyone else working!
I divorced after 30 years of marriage, the last 15 being Hell on Earth. Our house sold, and my half of the proceeds went toward buying another house which I could afford, however it is located in the big city of Roanoke, VA. I'm not used to hearing all these police and fire sirens! I got a nice old house that was built in 1951, all brick with all hardwood floors. No usable curtains were left so for the first time in my life I had to measure, buy, and mount curtains. Don't laugh too hard about this. I sure didn't!
Had two water valves leaking that the home inspector did not catch so had to hire a plumber. Dishwasher doesn't work, so must go buy one. I knew that before closing.
Took my first shower, and brown stuff started dripping from the ceiling. Called a paint guy and he said it might be nicotine from the previous owner which had been painted over. I was beginning to think it was the house from Hell! After cleaning it has not reappeared.
Had four overgrown bushes cut down and removed. Found umpteen airline liquor bottles underneath them. Obviously a visit had been made by Gatorfarmer, Wyatt Burp, Oldtimer, or one of my many old friends on here.
House has a full handicapped ramp from the front porch to the street. When it rains two boards bow up six inches and then go back down when they dry out. (Did I mention the house from Hell?).
I need to hire an electrician to put outlets in the basement. What man would have a house with only two outlets in the entire basement and none outside?
I still have six weird sized windows to find curtains/sheers for. The neighbors are getting tired of seeing me walk around in here in my skivvies.
One next door neighbor is a preacher and his wife so I feel safe on that side. The other next door neighbor is a hot little brunette who likes to lay out in her mint green bikini. She just got out of jail for her 3rd DUI. That may become a problem.......
My son is getting ready to go to Rice University in Houston, TX on a full scholarship ride with salary to get his Doctorate in Biology. He'll be gone at least 5 years and I will miss him sorely.
My daughter is not on speaking terms with me after the divorce. We'll see what happens with that.
That's about it at this point. I'll try to keep you posted on any other big changes as they occur.

Good luck with all that Steve.
If you were closer I'd give you a hand with your plumbing woes.
Maybe we could compare ex-wife from hell stories.

Sorry to hear of all your troubles. It seems sometimes back luck follows bad. Hope things improve for you soon.
I too went out on disability two years ago after two back surgeries. We were doing okay financially even after my wife lost her job but now after 25 years she wants a divorce and I'll be starting over too. I'm not sure where I'll go after the house sells but maybe won't to make major decisions like that just now.
Sad too about your daughter and hope you can work that out too soon. We don't have any children so don't have those kinds of issues.
Good to see you back and my gun forums do help me out quite a bit especially right now.

Sounds like some fine adventures await. The difference between bad luck and a fine adventure being just one of attitude.

Good to see you back.

The empty airplane bottles could mean several things. It could have been kids drinking illicitly. Or perhaps someone with a hidden drinking problem...or maybe someone liked to hide in the bushes and watch the house. Those odd size windows after all.

When I drank, I just carried a fifth around in my pocket. Half way measures just were not my thing.

Some bath towels, blankets, sheets etc and a few nails will solve your missing curtain dilemna.

Hard drinking woman fresh out of jail? Sounds like someone to get aquainted with, though the convenience factor must be balanced by the fact that she will know where you live.... Ponders.

Sounds like things are looking up. On the bright side, if you had to pay for your son's tuition at Rice, you'd be living in a box. They say houses like that have "character"....or is it characters? You'll be OK, hopefully your daughter will mellow.

Sorry to hear this and I hope that things improve.
Perhaps there are some VA members here for a small get together.
We gotta help each other out if we can.

Hang tough there! You'll be ok!

I just tacked up old sheets over the windows in a house I lived in once.

And for decorations, I'd ask for posters at the beer store. They usually have scads of them.

Steve, welcome back.

What are your complaining about, it sounds as if you've got a hell of start on some stories to share with the rest of us.

Watch out for that hot babe who likes to indulge. You live a little to close to just jump her bones and on dump her:eek:. Of course if she really ties one on perhaps she will not remember a thing:D

By the way good luck with the new place..

Update to Big Life Changes

Thanks all for the advice and photo recommendations!

Just when you would think the bugs were getting worked out after living here for three weeks, I discovered that the box with all my cameras is missing! I have opened all 80 moving boxes and they are not to be found. I have a call in to the moving company and will be filing a claim on their insurance. Apparently one or more of the moving guys got sticky fingers!! Where's Charlie Sherrod when you need him!!!

Those who mentioned the need to take photos of the cute brunette next door who lays out in her mint green bikini and drinks more that she should, well the missing cameras are the reason no pics have been posted.

Yesterday I had to go to Lowes because I paid a deposit to have an installer come out to measure for new doors. Well, it's been two weeks, got one call, he never showed up, and I figured it was *** whopping time. By the time I got done with an assistant manager, a customer service rep, and the head of the door department I'm a thinkin' this job will start movin' along now.

The last of the updates today is that my workbench is still sitting on the front porch because it will not fit in the house. My bro-in-law is coming to take it, hopefully before Christmas.

Driving home yesterday I was just up the street and noticed a guy had set out a nice work station from a restaurant. I pulled in and he told me it was free to whoever wanted it. He said it had been beside the road for a week, and if he had put "For Sale-$10" someone would have stolen it by now. He even loaded it on his truck and drove it down to my house! Now I need about 4 good men to help me move it into the basement so I can set it up as my new workbench!

The adventure never ends.........

Steve

A shame you lost your cameras. But perhaps just as well. Strange as it may seem, many women find it odd and a bit off putting when their neighbor begins to secretly take pictures of them and put them online.

Now I need about 4 good men ....

I think Craigslist has this section called men seeking men. Ponders. I am not sure what it is there for. It must be for things like that. Solemn nod. Best to just go ahead and post an ad that says you need four burly men urgently. What could go wrong?

a used house is like a used car going to have to put a few bucks in it. But you will make it right for you , lets look at the bright side through hard work this is only the beginning it can only get better
