I attended the Birch Run gun show yesterday. I usually arrive 1/2 hour before opening and am one of the first in line. Not yesterday, I was about 75th in line. A full house of dealers selling a little bit of everything. A steady line of customers coming in the door until at least noon. The most crowded Birch Run event I have attended. A lot of ammo and brass for sale. I also saw more revolvers than usual. One man, who I had not met before, had a 28 4", a 19 blue 6", and several M&Ps all 95% plus. Also saw a 98% 29-2 6 1/2" nickel in the presentation case, and a very clean 586 blue 4". Also, quite a few model 36s. I didn't see anything I couldn't live without, so I yacked with a couple of friends, bought a few gun magazines at 50 cents each, and headed for home.

Yes, they ask at the door is you have any firearms. All incoming guns must be unloaded and band-tied. They say it is for their insurance. This venue is a sports arena which may be over the 2500 person capacity limit of concealed carry in Michigan. Buyers are allowed to carry in, and walk around with, guns for sale, they just have to be unloaded and band-tied.

That show was well attended, no doubt, but nothing like the Grand Rapids show a few weeks ago. That show had a 45 minute to one hour wait to enter from the opening at 9AM until nearly 2PM. The isles were so crowded it was impossible to see the tables. I left and returned on Sunday when the crowds were actually less than normal.

John has it right that Smith & Wessons were in abundance at the Birch Run show. After striking out at the last three shows, I found more vintage Smiths than I've seen in quite a while. A number of nice Colt revolvers as well. In addition to the S&W's John already mentioned, a very clean 2" pre 10 for $300, and 98% 15-3 for $400 stand out in my memory.

I left Saturday with a 99% 2" 15-3 in nickle, a gun I've had on my short list for a long time. Made in 1975, this one looks like new. I took a quick swing through before leaving for home on Sunday and crowds were down to below normal again. The 4" 28-2 was still there and I was weak, so it followed me home too. Best haul I've made at a show in some time.

For those keeping track...by Saturday afternoon I don't think there was a box of rifle or pistol primers to be had, although there was an abundance of shotgun primers. Plenty of powder, good amounts of brass, but component bullets were in short supply for anything considered popular.

Roe: A pre-10 2", for $300!!! I picked up a late 60's 2" Model 10 last spring at the Novi Antique Arms show, but K snubs are hard to find, and that sounds like a great buy. I missed that one! The 28 looked pretty good, but as I already have one, I just looked. I missed the 15 nickel 2". If I had seen it first... Congrats, you found some nice buys! I have a 4" blue 15 and it is one of my nicest shooting guns. I am looking forward to the Sports Show and the Michigan Antique Arms show both in Novi in April. Maybe the people in DC are stimulating the economy! Best wishes, John

Arrived at Birch Run at 08:45. Decided to go get another breakfast at McDonalds and let the line go down. Went back at 09:45 the line was even longer. Went to the Harley dealer just down the street for about 45 minutes, went back to the gun show and the line was longer yet! Gave up, don't have the patience to stand in line to pay high prices for guns, ammo, or reloading supplies. Hopefully this buying frenzy will slow down soon. Meantime I have enough reloading supplies to last about a year.

Glad I missed Birch Run because of the crowds, but sounds like there were some great buys to be had. I woulda been all over that 2" pre-10 also. I let one go and now I am wishing that I hadn't. Nice to know that the Smiths I did hang on to continue to appreciate.
