I'll be hitting the "big" 6-0 in October and thought the best gift possible to myself would be a nice S&W from the same year. Ok so for a 1956 4" Combat Magnum that would be good to shoot as well as admire what should I expect to pay? I chose this over the "pre-27" in 3.5" as I'm guessing it'd be more affordable and I'd be equally happy with either one.

This is out of my realm so any help would be appreciated. I'd prefer to find one with a red ramp and w/o rear, tt and th not that important. I don't want a beater (hey I still look pretty good so the gun should too :D), but it shouldn't be mint either as it will see range use and perhaps even get carried now and then.

I originally thought about a .44 but frankly I'm condensing my ammo and the price on .38s especially is much better as well as the fact I'm well stocked on both .38 and .357 (though I mostly shoot that in my 686 no dash-I'd rather have a lot of a few calibers rather than a few of a lot of calibers).

Thanks.

You might find a decent condition shooter for around $1000; maybe less if you found one owned by someone who thought it was "just another model 19." A really nice one with original box/papers could be double or triple that. Good luck.

With a 1956 birth date you ought to be looking for a Birth-Day gun! They were shipping lots of guns in 1956.
Check out what day of the week you were born to see if it was a weekday that S&W was shipping.
Probably the most common would be a pre-model-10(?)

a pre model 10 with serial number range C 360000 - C 400000 will give you a S&W revolver from 1956

Might consider a Combat Masterpiece in either 22 or 38. Half the cost of the Magnum and just as much fun to shoot.

If you find one from September 1956 let me know, that's my birth month and year. I too will be the big 60.

By golly, I do have one from November 1956; a pre-35, 22/32 target 6"~~ photobucket is being uncooperative so no pic..
I'd be hard pressed to sell it, I've got a bunch invested in it and it's my favorite gopher gitter...

S&W Fan:
How about a K-22 Masterpiece (6"), shipped 11/19/56, with letter? Sorry, but I can't send any photos at the present. Nice gun - and its a gopher gitter, too.

Let me know if you're interested.
