I've been trying to figure out what type S&W birth year revolver I crave the most. Well I think I have decided on a 2" Mod. 10 M&P. Problem is, I do not think I have ever seen one. 1960 seems to be a problematic year to try to obtain, but I am unable to change that birth day of mine, Lord knows I would love to. I believe many S&W models where going thru short time changes of one kind or another. I believe what the revolver I am looking for (correct me if I am wrong, please), is a 4 screw, with diamond magna grips, I am hoping it was available with a round butt. I would also hope it had a half moon front sight, but I doubt it. It would probably have a front sight similar to the pencil barreled 10-5 and similar. I do not know if there was a nickel option or if blue was the only choice. If someone has a pic of what I crave I would love to see it. I would like to know the approx. value of a sample in good condition. I would like to know the correct serial # range that I am looking for.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

"a front sight similar to the pencil barreled 10-5"
There is no such thing as a pencil barrel. I believe you are referring to a standard barrel. And there is also a heavy barrel, but I don't believe snubbies had those.

At present, the most desirable K-frame snubbies generally available (aside from those few made prior to WWII) would be those in the postwar S-series. Or you could try for an original 2" Victory model if you want something unusual.

For 1960 you should be looking for a 10-1 as the -1 came out in 1959. But, as plenty others before me have said, never say never with S&W.

Well, ya'll have helped me a bunch. I now know (correct me if I'm Wrong, Please) that I am looking for a 2" 10-1.
It will be a four screw with diamond grips and the sight will be like what would be on a 10-5 snubbie. The serial# will fall between C429,741 and C474-148.
Thanks, now, I need to know what one like we are talking about is worth $. If one of you Fella's has one like it in your safe taking up space, let me know what kind of deal we can work out.

I am looking at a pre model 10, 4 screw, 4", Ser# C4335XX that is being sold as a 1960 model. If so, a 1960 model could be a pre Mod 10, or a Mod 10 no dash, or a Mod 10-, and they all would be 4 screws. Is this correct?
How much would the 4" that I found in 90% condition be worth,$ ?

It seems to me that C4335XX would be too late to be a non model marked pre 10. I believe it should be either a 10-0 or 10-1, But again, anything is possible with S&W. This s/n does look like an early 1960 manufacture though. Yes, you are definitely looking for a 4 screw.

Hopefully some of the M&P experts will show up and help out on this one.

I am not trying to tease you, but I have a 28, 6" no dash from 1960. Not wanting to part with it though. I have never tried to get a birth year gun. 1953 would be mine. Good luck finding your gun! Bob

I appreciate the help, can anyone tell me what kind of value I can place on a 4" vs the 2" such as I described, I would say in the 90% range?

I see a lot of variation in serial numbers that shipped in 1960 but they generally fall between C475XXX and C525XXX . . . with some in the lower end of the s/n range shipping late in the year.

Here is C523739, a 4" Model 10 (marked) 4-screw that shipped in November 1960 . . . certainly not 90% but with honest patina.

As to value, I would estimate a 90% 4" round butt to sell in the $450 to $500 range.

Thanks again for the information, I was wondering, what would be the hottest defensive load that should be fired in a 1950 5 screw M&P and or a 1960 4 screw M&P? (safely, for revolver and shooter), if the gun is in good condition. I know I have fired quite a few +P rounds in my 1967 10-5 M&P without any ill effects that I am aware of. Would there be any difference?
