Bit of a stocks (grips) dilemma--M29-2

Spook76, just to give you some more Culina stock pics, here are my other 2 sets of Culina targets to look at too. I really like John and Jennifer's work, both fit and finish and the way they feel in hand.

This one is a set made from Cocobolo wood and are installed on my old 5" 27-2, which I bought new back in 1974.

And this set is done in English Walnut and are mounted on my 6 1/2" barrel 27-5 "Outnumbered" gun.

All my Culina stocks were priced between $185 and $225. They aren't cheap, but then quality never is.

I'll offer you some advice , wood combat grips . They feel fantastic in hand ,
if you think the target stocks a slightly larger than you want , combats are going to feel real good. At least to me. Not cheap, the last set I bought I paid around $ 400 , but worth it in my opinion. Also plenty of aftermarket wood combat style (finger grooves) on the secondary market for much less and would feel just as good .
Rubber grips look hideous in my opinion . God intended guns to be made of metal and wood.

Greg

And stag (sambar, elk etc.) of course.

Herretts are my go to for aftermarket target stocks. Work out well for me! Your results may vary. Shooting Stars on 28 no dash, and Herrett Jordan Troopers on 29-3. Bob

What part of TX are you in? Surely someone nearby would let you try some different stocks? I’m near Austin and have several I’d let you try in the hand on your gun.

Thanks for the very kind offer! We're about a hour outside San Antonio. We've got a young kid (about 14 months old--the one I just got his own NRA Life membership), so it can be hard to coordinate getting out to meet people for that sort of thing, but every once in a while it could be managed. I imagine there are people around SA willing to help on this front, too, but I don't know of any.

Most of my close friends and relatives either just use stock factory grips or have semi-autos; I've got lots of aftermarket/custom grips, but they're all on things like 1911s, HiPowers, Colt SAAs, SIGs, etc. As I finally decided to just bite the bullet (heh), I've now ordered a few to try out on this S&W. I've got a pair of Keith Brown Ropers and a couple from Ahrends on their way to me, and will likely get something from Herret's, soon. Between those, I should get a better idea of what works/doesn't for me, then go from there.

I, truly, appreciate your offer, and may take you up on it at some point. Depending on various factors, assuming you might be curious about something I've got by then (like my new Keith Brown Ropers), I'd be happy to return the try them favor. Anyway, I'll see how these all go, and work from there. :)

Spook76,
I look forward to seeing what your new grips look like on your gun and which ones you like the best.

I just got in the first "victims" to try, and I love them...Keith Brown Ropers, exhibition-grade black walnut. Excuse the couple quicky photos; it's cloudy out, and I'm in a rush. The second photo shows the color most like they look in person.

Those Keith Brown's are really beautiful, Spook76. I can't wait to hear how they feel when putting some lead downrange. I've never seen and KB stocks in person, but I've heard great things about them.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Eagle Grips. S&W N Frame Square Butt Revolver Grips - Eagle Grips, Inc. - The World's Finest Handgun Grips

They are making a reproduction (more or less) of Coke style grips for a lot less than originals - $200. S&W N Frame Sq. Butt WALNUT CHECKERED Heritage Grips with reclaimed Medallions I have an old pair of Eagle "Cokes" from before the current production and they feel and look pretty good, except they have no medallions.

Although I haven't tried them, I like the look of their Heritage Compact grips - $160. Much less bulky than S&W target grips. S&W N Frame Sq. Butt Heritage Compact Checkered Revolver Grips

Spook-

I'm quite impressed with your new Brown grips. Bring that gun when you next visit.

Spook-

I think you need a nice used Safariland M-29 holster or the same basic thing, an El Paso Model 2. Lined, and I'd choose basketweave stamping.

Where you live, with cougars occasionally in the yard, that .44 is a good carry gun choice.

If you insist on owning a nickle plated gun, at least you stocked it well.
