Bit of ann unorthdox discussion.

Well I think we all agree that there is a use for every cal. Pretty much and some better choices than others... there is a book called "one second after" get it and read it.. I think a better choice would be to have survival rifles. I keep hearing that a 22 isnt going to take down large game the way a 308 will but what most don't think about is that how much game is going to be out there to be hunted after the entire u.s. starts hunting them.. and using a 308 to take the only game availible like squirrels is a joke.

Everyone wants to think they r prepaired for somethin like that but in reallity being over prepaired makes you a target.. so there truely no such thhing as being prepaired id suggest getting an ar and a good 22 hunting rifle and have plenty of ammo for both and pray to god that none of this ever happens..

Buy the book its a real eye opener

All MacGuyver needs for defense and survival is a blue pen, a bag of quick-dry cement, and a dead Tomagotchi.

This is really a good convo. So here is my .02 cents, I have heard that only 1 in 4 americans own guns, this means 3 in 4 are going to have to steal or purchase the weapons and ammo, seein as they now have no experience with the weapon this gives us an advantage. Second my entire family have guns ranging from .22 to 12 gauge and an assortment of handguns i know we could all get together in one location. Each person pull shifts watching and guarding our place preferably the second or higher floor of an abandoned building for a nice view of the surrounding ground. I would stick with my 22 seeing as i am most comfortable with it. Also Big 5 is right down the street and if im lucky i would take another 15 22s for parts and as much ammo as possible no matter what caliber, cause as we take people out im taking their guns as back up and for the piece of mind that someone else dont have them. this is just a start :D

Get yourself an AR, and forget the notion that you will be able to defend yourself and your family when and if the poop hits the fan with a .22 LR. You will be overrun and killed. The .22 is fine to put small game on the table in a survival situation. Get yourself 1,000 rounds of .223 from Georgia Arms or The Ammoman etc. when it goes on sale, and store it. Now you're all set for the apocalypse. DON'T ROCK YOURSELF TO SLEEP THINKIN' THAT .22LR IS GOING TO PROTECT YOU ! ! That's from a combat veteran, FWIW.......

I think you would be surprised at the number of people who look at your 10,000 rounds as being low on ammo. :)

If you can only choose one, it would be something on the order of the 22 Mg.

If I could have another, it would be a .308.

If I could have a third, it would be a 12 ga. pump gun...an 870, or a Mossberg.

Lay in all the 22 Mg ammo you can, no less than 1000 rounds of .308, and at least 500 rounds of assorted slugs, buckshot and bird shot for the 12.

Such a battery should keep you alive for quite a while.

We have several 22's, rifles and pistols/revolvers, and thousands of rounds of ammo for them. In most any situation where we had to bug out I can't see taking more than one handgun a piece for small game in that caliber. Defense would have to be the first priority and the little 22 doesn't measure up.

I know very little about diff. ammunition but I'm just curious: Would a .22 penetrate someone at less than 25 yards, 50 and 100yards?

Penetrate through them all the way? Probably not. I have seen some articles on a .22 penetrating the skull. It doesn't have enough energy to exit so it just rattles around the skull cavity.

The .22 can kill small critters. While they have thinner skulls than humans, their squishy parts aren't all that different. The big difference being their organs tend to be only 2-3 inches below the skin and hydrostatic shock from a .22 can do a lot more damage to a tiny critter.

Thanks guys. Ant, rattles around the skull cavity? Sounds awful haha. I was just curious as far as self defense goes(the 15-22 is all I have, for now). Hell, I wouldn't want it going completely through someone as far as safety goes, won't hit anyone else so that's good. Rust: Yeah I keep hearing .22rifles being used to eliminate varmint problems or I guess small game hunting.

Well ill add my .02 to this... when I bought my wife a walther p22 and added the viridian system to it I was mocked by everone I knew.. saying a 22 won't kill no one... well I've been shooting everything from comp pellet guns to beltfed m2s since I could walk and till this day I've never heard of or read an article that talked about a woman being attacted and saying " well I pulled my pistol and shot him 6 times but once he figured out it was a 22 he went ahead and raped me anyway".. I'm sorry but I don't believe if I put a green dot on your chest you would continue towards me. And I really doubt that when 3 feet of flame comes out (shooting in the dark with short barreled pistol) you will stick around to see how big of a hole it knocked in you... if you can run you will.. my father was shot in the back of the leg by a friend when he was 16 till this day he swears he didn't know where he was hit he just knew from the waist down he though he was on fire. A pistol your comfee with is the best choice for protection..period

Your scenario brings to mind a T-Shirt saying:

"The Apocalypse was yesterday - Today we have a real problem"

I can totally agree. While like I said before .22lr would not be my first choice of caliber, if you are a good shooter and make good use of cover and keep the fight close enough for it to be effective you can take people out of the fight with it. If I had to make a choice, I'd rather go up against someone flailing an AK around over their head Iraqi-style than a U.S. Infantryman with a 15-22.

I don't think anyone would disagree that the biggest round caliber would be most beneficial for defensive purposes in a shtf or any scenario, heck if I could prepare for the worst case I would have a 6 figure amount of .308 caliber rounds with a fal rifle, but thats unrealistic for me anyway.
No matter what ones opinion is, someone else can make a legitimate counter point.
My reasoning with my opinion comes with the thought that the 22 is the most popular caliber so it stands to reason that in the long run that the 22 will be the most easily to come by since there would be no more walmarts or sporting goods stores to restock your supplies.

I can say "what good is a 308 once you run out of ammo" but someone else can say "what good is a 22 if you wont survive long enough to run out of ammo" so either way it boils down to too many factors to what really is going to be the best choice of firearm defense. Probably will mostly involve how prepared you are beyond firearm defense.

An AR-7 is a great example of a .22lr used as a survival weapon. they're so cheap I'd like to pick one up just for the sport of it ...
