When I went to work on Friday, I saw a very different looking revolver. This single action gun was made by CENTURY MFG., INC. in Indiana and fires .45-70 ammo.

This bad boy is heavy enough to be used as a boat anchor.

Don't know about shooting it, but I think it would be a great conversation piece.

Does anyone have a gun like this one?

I do know the Century from pictures. It has a bronze frame. The revolver wasn't long in production.

I did shoot the Magnum research Biggest Finnest Revolver.

The 10 inch barrel compesate the recoil of the full load .45-70 nitro cartridge.

It shoot quit accurate if you can hold the revolver on target. I did shoot it off hand. When I find one for the right price I will buy one and add it to my collection.

I love my wrists too much to try a pistol in 45-70. I tried a 30-30 barrel on my Dad's contender pistol about ten years back and that was enough for me.

My 4½" bbl .41 magnum is enough for me.

But I'd buy a revolver in a rifle caliber in a heart beat if the funds were available. Can't say I'd shoot it more than once, though :D

Tapatalk ate my spelling and grammar.

The most worst recoil I had was with a Thompson contender in .357 maximum. Boy, that hurts. After 3 shots I have had it. I know I am a whimp.

Shot with an other barrel just before the .357 maximum full loads .44 magnum with the contender. Very accurate and the recoil wasn't that bad.

But. .357 maximum. No thank you.

I shot a .357 max in my 14" Contender for years
Theur. What are you talking about?? Recoil ain't
bad at all. Took many nice deer here in Indiana
with it and 3 wild boar in Tennessee as well.
It's a "baby" compared to the rifles cartridges
mentioned above.

It was a 6 inch barrel. It really give's a feeling to my wrist that I won't want to feel again.

I do think that the 14' will help to compesate the recoil.
Same as the 10" helps with the .45-70.

As I said. The factory loaded .44 magnum with the Contender was very good to handle and very accurate.

But the .357 maximum with that short barrel. No.
But I am a whimp.

I have a Contender Super 14. I put Pachmayr grips on it and the 30-30 recoil is not too bad and shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yds from a rest using a scope.

I also have a S&W .460 XVR that has a bit of recoil.

Used to have a Ruger Super Redhawk with 7 1/2' barrel in .454 Casull. It also shot .45 Colt and after shooting a handful of the .454's the .45 felt like a .22LR.

Theur,
OK, with a 6" barrel i could see where the Max would be
a handful. You are not a wimp at all.
My Contender had Pachmayers and a 14" BBL and was
very controllable. If you get a chance to shoot this
cartridge through a long barrel contender you will
certainly like it.

Back in the early 80's while walking around a gun show I saw a Century Arms 45-70 some guy was walking around with (just for show) and I was hooked. A few years later I bought a JD Jones 45-70 barrel for my Contender collection and it was a beast! It had no comp and Pach's were a must if you wanted to shoot it much. I also took it to Colorado on a hunt with me.
A friend of mine has one of the guns in question but hasn't decided to sell it yet and I have my 500's so I'm happy for now.

Worst recoiling handgun I ever fired was a Thompson Contender in 45-70. After two rounds I gave it back to my friend it belonged to and said "enough". I have several barrels for my TC, and 44 mag is pleasant to shoot as well as the 7X30 Waters. I no longer need the macho big gun, and while I have fired a S&W 460, (not too bad), I have not fired the 500 S&W.

I remember seeing a Century as a kid at gun show. I have a 12" Contender in .45-70 and it shoots good! The worst handgun recoil I can recall was my friend's XP100 in 7x57 Mauser.
