I always wonder why more of these climbers don't get snake-bit? Rattlesnakes, and I think about every other snake in North America, like to sun themselves on rocks, ledges, tree limbs, etc. I would think those climbers would get into snakes all the time.

high ground / narrow chute

Makes me think of the movie Josey Wales, when the Indian asked Josey about advantages.
This hikers advantage was the high ground and bear had to go through a narrow chute to get to him.
Flat ground or more open route to him and he is bear poop tomorrow.

I think it was this past weekend,

The neighbor scared the bear away,, but, later the bear came up the wheelchair ramp.
Authorities euthanized the bear,,

I think it's because snakes hang out where there is a food source nearby. Probably not much for a rattlesnake to eat up there.

I know how everyone is an expert afterwards and how easy it is to look from the outside in and "knowing" what's best. But I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how people are so oblivious to very obvious things.

You go into the wilderness without any kind of defense weapon... gun, knife, spray. A freaking walking stick/spear, something!

But I bet he had some energy bars with him, and he made sure the camera is rolling so he can talk/brag about his glorious hike to his fellow buddies, yeah, that's important.

Complacency kills!
