Blew up my 629 today..embarrassed

I feel singularly privileged to meet the man who has never made a mistake or had an accident of any type.

You are reading too much into my response, swamp....We are talking about reloading and, I don't think learning by near misses is the way to learn!

Do you? REALLY? That would be the same as learning how to fly an airplane by crashing over and over and over and over and.....REALLY?

Life lessons need to be learned, but, we are not talking about learning how not to marry the wrong woman, we are talking about reloading......

Stay on topic boys......

About five years ago, I started using Titegroup in a 45 Colt caliber application.
The best thing I can say about it is that its performance in the large cases was inconsistent.
Gave away the best part of a five-pound jug of the stuff, and never looked back.
Glad I did.
Just saying...
Don

The fact is powder choice didn't blow up Dutch's gun. His load was within the range provided by Hodgdon, even a double charge is less than max. Maybe Dutch made a mistake, or maybe it was something else. I don't know.

If you're going to rant about Titegroup, you need to include the other similar fast burning powders that give a low loading density, there's just not that much difference between them.

Anything else?

Yes. Promoting safe handlaoding practice is a worthy goal, if that's your goal. Posting that somebody is ignorant and deserves to blow up their gun, even when they're using a published load, is way, way past the line in my opinion.

I think you owe Dutch an apology.

And that's all I have to say about that.

John

Thanks for qualifying John. Your opinion is.....well, your opinion and, you are entitled to it even if I refuted you theory! Load density by volume and then the charges are not equal.....Why didn't you do that math and then post your answers?

Because THEN, you would see what I have been saying all along...... But, whatever.

As I said earlier, I am super thankful that you are okay......but.......if you had read a warning by me or another experienced loader about Titegroup and you went ahead and loaded it, anyway, you deserve to blow up a gun. Actions have consequences. Thankfully, no personal injury occurred this time.

I qualified my statement as well: "IF YOU HAD READ A WARNING......."

Dutch,
good thread and glad you weren't injured. Takes a lot of guts to admit that you destroyed a fine handgun like a 629. This also keeps in mind the inherent risks in any phase of reloading. I personally have not done much of it yet so probably use the "belt and suspenders" method of double checking every step, consistent procedures and keeping good records. I only have a single stage press but for revolvers that's sufficient for now. Anyways, get back on that horse and chalk one up to experience.

Do you have a picture of the barrel? Like where your hand is on the third picture?

Man, glad you weren't hurt! Loctite makes a lot of industrial epoxies......Might wanna give them a try! ;)

looks like detonation theory may be dismissed.
metal is bent and torn more than shattered.

forget the bondo dude .. that one will at least require some JB weld

Im working on the assumption he finds nothing out of the ordinary about the barrel by way of bulges or splits since he hasn't mentioned them for not being there.

the forces look centered directly where the charge would be as though it let go before the bullet got the memo to move.

Glad to hear everyone is OK.
I know it's a cool thing to try & get as much as you can when reloading, at what price are you willing to pay.
Please be a little safer next reloading.
You don't want to have a Face transplant?

What?? I don't need to hear you say anything like that. Go back and read. I did make a mistake, but it was not by pushing the limits.

FYI, his load was 4.8 with a published maximum of 10.8
its a head scratcher as he had to quad charge to do this which is hard to imagine.
