Blown out extractor (second one)

My first post...., not good news...
I've got an early gun (DTU74xx). I shoot in competition on a regular basis. In the July 4th. steel plate match I lost my second extractor after firing one round. (I had already shot 2 stages).
It was gone spring/retainer/extractor. (This the second time this has happened).
I've never had any sort of problem with this gun, other than losing the extractors. I also shoot with a few other guys using the S&W 15-22 and none of them have had this problem. By crying and moaning I've gotten the "blue" springs and 1 set of extractor parts from the Factory.
I'm pretty sure but not possitive that the fired round was still in the chamber??.
The gun is always cleaned before shooting and I don't normally have any other problems with the gun.
Ammo will vary from CCI mini-mags/CCI Blazer/Federal bulk.
The gun is no longer reliable. I suppose I'll have to send it back this time...ANY others having this problem? (Yes, I've done a "search" and this seems to be a non issue for most users of the 15-22?).

sorry to hear but from what ive seen, sending the gun back usually resolves whatever issue someone is having.

I bought my 15-22 in Nov. 2009 and I was having a problem with OOB ( out of battery) discharges. This would result in the extractor getting blown off. Do a search for out of battery on this forum and you will get some results. I sent my 15-22 back to S&W and they repaired it free of charge even paid shipping and included a free mag when it was shipped back.

How many rounds do you have throw your gun? How many rounds before it broke again?

If you replaced the extractor, spring and retainer (as I'm assuming you did after losing the first set) it sounds like you may have a defect with your bolt which allows the extractor to pull out.

I think you'll have to send it back, but at least you now they'll make it right. It isn't a common issue, so can certainly be resolved.

I've blown 6 extractors in my guns (not the 15-22). Most of the time it comes down to either Remington Golden Bullets or too much extractor spring pressure.

Just call S&W. The should replace the entire bot assembly just to be sure.

I wonder is it because the round is not seated in the chamber fully and the back end of the case. Or is it going off while being chambered. You mentioned it happened in a match, were you rapid firing?

The M&P15-22 will fire before the bolt is fully closed because of the AR15 fire control group used in the lower receiver. The hammer will strike the firing pin when the bolt is about 1/4" open. Can't happen with the AR15/M16 because of the bolt/carrier design.

My DTM-series did this maybe two years ago and the rifle went to S&W for repair. I also aggressively polished the chamber when the rifle came back and it hasn't happened again.

Some ammo has rather tacky wax on the outside of the bullet that can slow or prevent complete feeding. Some bullets are slightly larger than others and that can cause problems in self loading .22LR firearms. If you've been using the same cartridges and had a pair of out-of-battery detonations I'd start looking at the ammo as well as the chamber.
