Bluegrass Music Lost a Legend Today

Bobby Osborne passed away today at age 91. He'll join his brother, Sonny, and they'll be pickin' and singin' Rocky Top. RIP.

I saw the brothers in Nashville, they were a crowd
favorite, Rocky Top and Muddy Bottom my favorites.

I was fortunate enough to have seen the Osbourne Bros at the Union Grove Fiddlers Convention in the late 70's.

They brought a lot of pleasure to lots of folks.

A coworker said his wife was getting him a mandolin for Christmas. I asked how long he'd been playing and he looked at me like I had 3 heads. Apparently some people think it's a kitchen gadget.

In bluegrass music the mandolin player is the percussionist. They down stroke staccato chords on the back beat to emulate a snare drum. Timing is everything.

A couple months before turning 5, my dad held me on his shoulder
so I could see Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys.
They were in a big tent in the town near where I grew up. About all
I remember is a guy in a white hat playing music.
