Bodyguard Fail need help

Hi all
My grandson got a new S&W bodyguard 380 with laser.
First time at range pull trigger back all the way, sometimes it goes bang sometimes not maybe 50/50. The trigger pulled back until it stops to the rear.
Without magazine trigger cycles normally.
Any thing I can do before sending to S&W ?
Also if he sends it back anyone have a guess how backed up they are ?

Is he releasing the trigger all the way back out to reset?

I recall Bodyguard .380s have a very long reset point.

I tried it its not the operator.
It resets fine if the hammer drops.

Hmmm

I don't know how to better explain it. You pull the trigger all the way back and the hammer doesn't drop.
The hammer comes back but seems like not far enough. I have searched but haven't found much information.
Sometimes the hammer will drop and the gun fires.
Mag stays in no problem.

If it's new and does this and the fault is not due to the mag dropping, then it has left the factory broken. If the pistol is used, then somebody may have been monkeying with the trigger and has made the gun unreliable.

The Bodyguard 380 is renowned for its incredibly long trigger. I tried one and found that my trigger finger started getting mixed up with my support hand before the trigger broke. Mind you, I have long, skinny fingers.

One more thing. Are you and your son trying to stage the trigger or are you pulling straight through. I would suggest getting a snap cap and doing a bunch of straight through dry firing to see if that alleviates the problem.

The gun is the problem.
I was hoping someone had the same problem and a fix.
I can fix most anything, but I think it will go back to S&W so I don't void warranty as it's not my gun.

That is a good perspective to have. That is where I was going to draw the proverbial line with mine - if the issue was mechanical with the "gun" then I wasn't willing to touch them. However, the magazines aren't part of the "gun". They are interchangeable. So I tried the fix in the thread I linked to and that took care of that issue for me (although, again, I would have liked to have seen them be 100% right out of the factory). That eliminated the trip back and forth (or perhaps a few) to S&W and the extra firing they would do with them.

Although, I would be curious if there are any shops with good gunsmiths that can work on such things? Or does it truly have to go back to S&W?

I forgot until reading this but I had a similar issue when I first got my Bodyguard 380 a few years back. However, in my case the hammer would never drop (store didn’t let me dry fire it).

I sent it back to S&W and it’s been 100% reliable since.. not sure what they actually did to it though.

Bought mine when they first came out. Had to send it back because of light primer strikes right out of the box. S&W repaired it and it’s been fine since. Ive put enough rounds through it that I trust it to carry it.
